Just came back watching the film.

It was awesome! The monsters roars were loud and they were huge especially Godzilla, who doesn't appear until the Hawaii scene.
Also, a lot of people die.
The MUTOs were big, crawling bug like creatures that appears unstoppable to anything the military throw at them. I didn't bother staying if there were any after credits scenes since i had to go

Great movie. If there's a sequel, i hope it features the other kaijus in the Godzilla franchise or even a crossover with Pacific Rim.

The older movies are certainly better (from the few I've seen), but this movie was quite excellent overall. I'd personally give it a 8.5~9/10. Also superb was the soundtrack... if you have the chance to see Godzilla, I Highly Recommend going and seeing it.

Went to watch it last night...
Enjoyable but not really that great.

Once again, they put really meaningless human interaction in that movie. The chemistry between Ford and his father is the thing we need to keep the human emotion flowing. But instead they add too much the element of his wife and children.

Some of the scene really doesnt makes sense to me. If the female broke out from the nuclear waste dump, how come the guard doesnt spot it after it let such a big hole on it. And try to transport a nuclear warhead from the land passing 2 MUTOs hunger for nuclear is such a stupid idea.

On a positive note, godzilla really look intimidating there. The roar on IMAX send my body shivers. And I gives full approval on how they handle the kaiju fight. That atomic breath is awesome.

They really made Godzilla into a good guy in this movie.

Hell, the Muto would send EMP that would kill all the lights in the city, but they would coincidentally return just as Godzilla stepped into the scene.

Watched it two hours ago and...

Special effects were great (the director succeeded in giving us a good idea of just how big the MUTOs and Godzilla are), but the actor performances were rather lackluster, except for...well, it's pretty much a given...Bryan Cranston. Ken Watanabe spent a lil' too much time playing the horrified, open-mouthed scientist IMHO.

- The monster fight in Hawaii was a bit frustrating in how it kept being interrupted by scene/POV cuts; I'd have liked to see more of Godzilla duking it out.

- Since when were Kilo SSKs part of the Akula SSN class? That wasn't an Akula that got marooned in Hawaii...

- Doesn't the Yucca Mountain (wasn't that place closed/deactivated recently?) nuclear repository (a place I imagine is as well-guarded as Fort Knox, if not even better) have seismometers to detect earthquakes (Nevada is relatively active in that regard, IIRC) for safety? I'm pretty much surprised the guards didn't notice the other MUTO gouging out the other side of the mountain.

- Why did they ferry the entire Minuteman missile when they could just disconnect the warhead from the fuselage's third stage? It's much lighter and mobile that way (see how they manually carried it off at the end of the film?); an even better option would've been to use a MIRV like the W87 (which, incidentally, can be mounted on the Minuteman). Also, why use a train when two or three Chinooks could've transported the entire convoy's contents? It's almost as if they wanted to get ambushed like sitting ducks during hunting season.

- The moment where Godzilla finally uses his atomic breath was just glorious.

I would write more, but I'm too knackered to gather my thoughts, condense and refine them into an ordered list.

...Oh, and before I forget...what the hell happened to the giant centipede?

Godzilla was "decent". Great visuals. The monsters looked really impressive and the destruction to the cities seemed quite realistic. At the same time this film is definitely more about humans dealing with the reality of monsters within this universe more so than it's about the actual monsters. Godzilla unfortunately doesn't get much screen time. About 15-20 minutes of him doing cool stuff. Every other time it's a glimpse of him or another monster about to duke it out, then we cut to more of the same issues of the military figuring out how to deal with them or a newscast in the aftermath of the destruction elsewhere. That got old really fast. I started falling asleep in the theater a couple of times. I heard the same sentiments afterward from a group of folks behind me when it was over. And Bryan Cranston's scenes are all essentially within the trailer. Nice bait and switch I guess.

Anyways, this is a movie a lot of people are going to have to be patient with. Personally I think the plot was great, but the movie suffers from really drawing out the exposition and what to do about the monster epidemic. Folks are going to probably walk in looking for Godzilla smashing monsters left and right, and while that does happen, it barely happens. It's more about the characters dealing with the new circumstances of this problem, and coming with a way to fix it. And unfortunately those characters didn't really do or go through anything to make me feel heavily invested in their cause.

The only godzilla movies that I've watched was the original and the other hollywood one, so I kind knew of what to expect. I'll say that the movie is very good (Should be a 8/10?) and has actually exceeded my expectations.
Great visuals. They used the Pacific Rim type lighting, which works well for the tone of the movie here. I'm quite okay with the length of fights, godzilla films always focuses quite a bit on the people. I can always watch my Pacific Rim Blu-ray when I want to see more fights.
The sounds in the movie's really awesome. That roar!
The music on the other hand... They fit the scenes, but sounds really generic....
What they did right was protraying the sense of helplessness. I enjoyed that, but I do believe they can absolutely do more to stress it. And godzilla feels like a good guy in the end... I always thought that godzilla is indifferent to humans...
The characters don't really mattered much, but their jobs were to just bare witness and then run like hell anyway. So I'm alright with that.
I have the same issues regarding the Yucca mountain scene and the missle that is already pointed by others. Seriously, they didn't notice something gouging out of the vault? Isn't it easier to just bring the warhead without the missile?

Was anyone else weirded out that the militaries near universal response to the Kaiju in this film to be "stand by and gawk" or "employ small arms fire"? Frankly it just seems a bit silly how you had all these operator like special forces dudes running around with their weapons prepared in CQC like positions when...they're fighting a giant monster. It's not even gonna notice anything like that.

I think the amount of Monster/Monster action wasn't TOO bad, but not really having a proper scene where the military got to go all out on any of the Monsters was a bit of a let down. As was Bryan Cranston, who basically made the first half of the movie so overwhelmingly compelling for me, getting killed off just as everything started building up. He was frankly a much more compelling POV character than his son was, and frankly, as a scientist type seems like he would have been far more relevant as a POV type.

I think "good, but not great" is probably the best way to describe this movie.

It had some epic moments to be sure. The last 20 minutes or so was definitely fun to watch. Once Godzilla got into the action there was some big throw downs. The atomic breath was damn epic that's for sure. Some nice team work there with the Muto and in a sense Godzilla and the humans. When Godzilla got to shine he definitely showed how he was the King of Monsters. Just a badass.

But at the same time the lack of Godzilla was an issue. Sure, you can say it's how these things go, but doesn't make it any less of an issue. The human side of the equation wasn't all that compelling. Didn't help that once Cranston's character died there wasn't exactly people left to carry the mail. His character's son wasn't that interesting and his wife just seemed too whiny (though understandably so) to care about either. Also way too much teasing. Don't set up the fight and then cut to characters we don't care about. Or at the very least don't do it as often as they did in the movie.

The good parts were great, but the majority of the movie was pretty forgettable. Kind of makes it a tricky thing to rate really.

Guess I'd say about a 7/10. A good movie, but doubtful to be the best movie of the summer. May pick up the bluray at some point for the last 20 minutes or so though .

Do stick around for the hatching of the first MUTO. That was simply a breathtakingly incredible scene, and actually genuinely scary. I'd frankly rate it as the most impressive scene in the movie, even above the end fight scene, just for how much it ended up blowing me away.

Which is part of the problem here. The way the film was setup makes it feel more like the MUTO's movie than Godzilla's.


Also. what the hell happened to the Giant centipede thing we saw in the first trailer?! It didn't even appear in this movie.


...this is sorta making me suspect that perhaps they did some drastic last minute cuts of some already completed monster scenes, and needed to find some way to complete the running time. Thus, allot of padding sequences got added. It WOULD explain the uneven pacing in the 2nd half of the film.

Yes, mortars could be used to...err...tease...the kaiju or at least distract them, but pretty much everything else requires electronics (mainly for the targeting systems) or electricity (fuses, ignition enhancers for firing mechanisms, etc), which makes them prone to fizzling out when close to the MUTO.

As for the soldiers gawking, well, I'm sure I'd be doing the same. "What the F- kind of sauce or condiment did they put in my MRE ration today? I must be hallucinating - this thing is too big to be true."

I'm quite certain the Mk.99 Fire Control System (FCS) in an Arleigh Burke destroyer's Combat Information Center (CIC) is not actually an Asteroids console. Those things are sharpshooter tools, not drunken weapons.

I guess I wouldn't have minded that not happening to the MUTO if they at least had gone all out against Godzilla who the US military CLEARLY wanted to kill...though for some reason the quite heavily armed US navy which had more than the firepower to try doing that (even up to the point of nukes) sees no reason to engage godzilla while he's safely out in the middle of the ocean, and they could generally just bomb him long range with more or less impunity.

WHY would you bother carrying around dead weight like a carbine/rifle magazines against what amounts to a walking fortified mountain? Why would you bother with pointing your rifle around to cover sectors like it meant anything? If you wanna bother being a decent distraction against a Kaiju, your commando team should be landing with nothing but loads of disposable/reloadable anti tank weapons, and maybe multi shot grenade launchers.

Cause this movie had like...three or four scenes where soldiers on recon were all running around with rifles drawn like it meant anything, without any heavy gear. You'd think at a certain point they'd catch on to how goofy that was.

Frankly what I'd have done is just have them store that one in a large underground vault with the rest of the MUTO remains they found in the Phillipines. Have it cannibalize those for food, and since everyone had assumed all those things were dead, nobody bothered to unseal the vault. When they do that to check in on it, they discover a nearly fully mature female MUTO finishing off the bones, and about ready to bust out.

That's the jist of what I assumed. I guess they figured all the soldiers somehow looked more "noble" ineffectually waltzing around with their useless rifles rather than cumbersome heavy weapons which might actually properly irritate a kaiju. Still feels pretty damn goofy.

Not really much commentary about what sort of weapons you'd actually use against godzilla, so not all that indepth IMHO. Frankly I think once it's clear that regular anti-tank/ship ordinance isn't working that effectively against Big G, the military would start trying to spam as many bunker busting bombs into his face, possibly the eye, or trying to crack his skull open after repeated hits. Be a messy affair.
