You'd be somewhat surprised at the sheer number of eroge that use subdued erotic scenes as an key component in the storytelling overall. Such as Kana ~Imouto~ and Crescendo or to a different degree, Casual Romance Club. The ones that get the most 'air time' are generally the mindless jaunts into the genre, basically anything from Illusion for example, but there are quite a few companies out there that are adept at weaving a plot intelligently around the sex.

The problem most people have is that they are pretty stereotypical in generalizing the content of all eroge to be like playing Schoolmate or Sexy Beach. The same is said when you get the bastardization of hentai in western view of adult anime.

kj1980's Japanese Otaku Lingo thread is a good read. Before I got to the part about the history of erogames, all I knew about To Heart was that the character "Multi" was the subject of an inordinately large amount of unlicensed T-shirts. Check that thread out!

Technically Hentai is Japanese for Pervert....Which bassicaly made it's way into anime porn due to the fact that it's Japanese
