I made it as far as my apartment, naming my doll, and totally clueless on what to do next.

Any suggestions?

explore the island you are in then take/complete quests from the NPC's at school and the station to get D's (money). Then after you are done go and explore the other islands and take quests too =P

then dress up your charadoll and yourself, or you could just hang out with friends, players or alone with your charadoll at Akiba.

The NPC is located at Ch2 of Akiba, around the corner of the building where GAMERS is.

I'm having trouble getting the japanese text to display during the game. I already changed the location, and non-unicode programs language, and default input language to Japanese, but the characters still appear as squares. Anyone have a solution?

On the same page as the Languages for non-unicode Programs, have you checked the box of Japanese in the list of the Code page conversion tables?

About the box...
You can go to Control panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages -> detail -> Language Bar (in Preferences -> check "Show the language bar on the desktop" option. A small box will appear & all you can do is changing your settings.

Well, that looks as if you only changed your 'keyboard' to Japanese setting, but not the system. I don't think I can help you since you are Vista (I use XP, so I'm not sure where things are located on Vista)...but try to use Beruko08's instruction to find the place to change your system to Japanese, or at least the Languages for non-unicode Programs to Japanese. Do try to look for something along the lines of "Regional and Language" under Control Panel.

Spoiler:
yours is really different from mine, but look like your input hasn't still been set to Japanese (it reads "United States-International"). Try to apply it

I took a break from studies. Was online today, from around 6 am japan time. There was quite a lot of new stuff broadcasting on tv. Did nothing more beside watching tv and trying to write in japanese.

I've been busy lately, so I have not done anymore than getting on collecting the 1000D each day (sometimes I even missed doing it).

There's not really much to do at the moment except chatting with others. I'm waiting for the inside of the schools made open to the public <3

I still haven't bought the winter clothes yet lol
