Victorique sure is strong but what pissed me off the most is that there were 3 more people on her side and no one even THOUGHT about coming and helping her! I'll be quiet about actually HELPING! Just WTF?! Just how egoistic do you have to be?

Victoriqu/Kujo interections are good but I picked this series for its mystery atmosphere which is really low here -_-

And looks like Victoriques mother is alive and probably will bring not a very nice suprise in the future...

I must say, this was the first time I've been genuinely disappointed by an episode of this series: 4-5 weren't as good an arc as either novel-based stories, but didn't really raise expectations either, but this episode really crashed compared to the set-up episodes.

On the one hand, we got badly shortchanged on the unique atmosphere of the village, which is supposed to be such a strong telling point for how the mystery plays out. On another, the main mystery itself, the gold thieves and the falling-out among them was so utterly glossed over as to be almost irrelevant. We got nothing of their backgrounds, their reasons for being there--why they believed this village would even have artifacts worth stealing! I really need to reread the novel now, because I definitely had none of this reaction from the book...and I believe that a lot of the metastory material from this episode was added for the anime. The hazelnuts and the dropping of the urn in the font seemed ridiculously slim evidence to make that deduction on. However, there is the saving grace that Victorique did not present this as "the answer" but actually went to the church and let the criminal incriminate himself by the theft attempt (i.e. her real evidence was that he was caught red-handed in another crime that followed the pattern of her earlier deductions).

Roscoe appears confirmed to be the magician from Ambrose's one-second flashback to the back of his head, and the suggestion is that he's hanging out with Cordelia; we'll see if that's confirmed or a red herring.

Score another one for the power of prophecy/fortunetelling in this series.

Genuinely nice moment when it was revealed that Victorique and Kazuya asked the same question to the oracle.

Harminia being able to hop around the village setting off random fires like timed explosions was just too over-the-top; I could buy the bridge going up in sudden flames as dramatic license, but the sudden massive explosions just from a torch; even if the roofs were thatched (I admittedly was not paying attention to the architecture) it wouldn't go up like that. Especially since she's doing all this ninja-hopping in full maid skirts.

On the good side again, the murder of Elder Theodore made sense and was tied in with the, y'know, clues.

I've pretty much come to the conclusion, though, that the anime, unlike the novels, is fundamentally not a mystery series but more of a "Gothic adventure" kind of thing--The Mysteries of Udolpho rather than Sherlock Holmes; time and again the writers of the anime have de-emphasized the mystery aspect in favor of the Victorique/Kazuya relationship aspect, keeping all of the latter while cutting significant amounts of the former, and I'm going to be watching it in that way from now on.

So, does anyone know if the next episode is from the second manga volume or the third novel? It looks like we're going to get three eps. per novel and two per manga vol., which would add up to the announced 24 if I'm counting correctly (6x3 and 3x2)?

Everything comes from the novels. The manga is just an adaptation just like the anime. The second anime story came from the GosickS side story novels, as will the other non-main novel episodes.

Breaking this episode up into 3rds, the final 1/3 of it was amazing. The scene with Victorique and Kujo was so emotional. Aoi, your acting pwns.

A 6 year old in a maid outfit? What? Maybe it was just a mental reenactment by Victorica.

Her brother finds any excuse to hang out with her. Does he play dumb as an excuse just to see her?

A nice twist on the maiden in the tower.

Lol, yeah. There were some weird things about this episode, such as:
1) Finding out Harmania did it, so easily.
2) Harmania being convincted to execution for a crime she commited when she was a child.
3) Harmania setting fire to whole village so fast and so easily.
4) Kujo being unable to overpower a maid and Ambrose doing it so easily.
5) Ambrose not giving a long winded idealistic speech before punching Harmania in the face (Hurr)
6) No one thinking to help Victorique pull Kujo up.

Other than that it was an okay episode. What made it up was Victorique shouting at Kujo. Very emotional.

1. H attacked V in the study, and knew the details of the old king's death. Might start you thinking. V saw the doves and thought of misdirection, then just put two and two together: coins for doves, and small person to hide and stop clock (she herself hides in a similar way so it would be in her mind). Neither easy nor magical.

2. In that small monarchy, the king's word is law. He exiled Cordelia in a similar autocratic way. Seems unjust to us, but normal in a mediaeval autocracy.

3. This is something so many people are getting wrong, it seems to me: the speed with which the fires sprang up was not shown in real time, but was a narrative technique to show H moving across town to the gate without having to take time to show all her movements. Clearly, the technique didn't work, since so many people still think it was supposed to be real time. And it does seem she had a magical supply of gasoline to spread around, lol.

4. Decent point, but Ambrose may be bigger and stronger than Kujou. And he didn't so much overpower her as surprise her and wrest the spear from her, throwing her temporarily off balance.

5. ....

6. I agree with this point, but I know it was to leave them alone for the drama.

The only real problem for me was having a six-year-old murder the king. Other than that, it was one of my favorite episodes.

Yeah I figured it was her too. I'm meant getting the conclusive evidence was what seemed too easy.

Everything else, yeah i guess it makes sense. I just wished they didn't rush it and let more explanation be given to little things like this. Needless to say, the Light Novel probably gives it more depth but still...

Which begs the question of why she spoke at all, if she's the one who did it. If she'd just kept her mouth shut, Victorica would never have had the details necessary to deduce anything.

What I thought is that Herminia was the one who found the body, and that she had the same kind of deductive abilities as Victorica. That they were, in fact, the so-called "power" of her people. Thus she would know that Victorica was innocent, and that the Elder knew it, too. And had exiled her in spite of it, making him the prime suspect. That would explain her talking to Victorica. Her being the culprit all along? It doesn't. It doesn't explain why she'd resent Cordelia like the rest of the villagers, either, since she'd know with absolute certainty Cordelia was framed. By her.

Suspected that Harmania was involved but didn't think she actually did it. At least Ambrose got to finally leave the village. Funny how he was the one that let her escape but then lby accident caused her death. Yay for Victorique saving Kujo this time, enjoyed how she couldn't show him her hands. Best part was one Ambrose mentioned that they asked the same question. Glad the tears were for a real reason. So Brian Roscoe was the magician? They both have the same hair style. Also seems like Cordelia is alive and tags along with him. From the back in that dress she look just like Victorique. __________________ My Anime List

Especially loved the bridge scene and Victorique crying as she was trying to save Kujo and I also loved how they both asked the same question. I figured it was something like that, but you can never be sure. Only part I didn't like was Harminia jumping around the village with a couple of fire sticks and blowing every thing. Seemed a bit over the top and tested my suspension of disbelief (how hard it is to stop one girl... not to mention how fast the fires were popping up, she had to be moving at incredible speeds). Also felt the whole mysteries were wrapped up too quickly, but that seems par for the course for the series. All that is forgivable, though, as the relationship between Kujo and Victorique continues to be the best part of the series. __________________

~Yami~ a random Indonesian otaku Join Date: Dec 2009 Location: Xanadu Age: 32	Spoiler for ep8: a simple case and everyone would already guess that Harminia is the culprit but a lot of lovely drama between Kujo and Victorique I must admit that I wish this anime will continue at least until 24 episode I can't imagine that both of them will be separated maybe the best scene is when Kujo and Victorique ask the elder a same question that's just too romantic.... XD Cordelia is alive..... what!~!!!

It still felt like it was made by a person that graduated from high school at least, so it wasn't painful. But still, wow, that was just so rushed... Points here and there are ignored, for one thing. And the Maid admitting to being the criminal and her death were just so... simple? Easy? Something like that. And her athletic abilities... Well, rather, psychic abilities. Teleporting throughout town burning everything in sight. Although the arc was pretty disappointing (mainly the second half/this episode), it was still pretty fun seeing the Maid and that old man. Those two really were hilarious. Especially the maid and all of her facial distortions. And oh...
