Or you could have Kotoura correct Manabe on his fantasies on what she's supposed to be doing. Cue slack-jawed Manabe and Kotoura looking like she wants to commit suicide that very moment.

*Goose is shot* We must make sure Kotoura never crosses paths with Hyudou Issei and the rest of Rias Gremony's crew from High School DxD. All the ecchi thoughts would overload her. Then again, Issei's only focused on oppai, and actually powered up, summoned an oppai fairy, and came back from the dead thanks to the power of oppai, whereas Manabe's a lot more creative with his fantasies... and then there's also the strong nakama spirit in later volumes of the light novels... ... y'know, I have a sudden urge to cross over Kotoura-san with other verses now. ...inb4 Aria crossover. Trainee Undine Kotoura, who reads the hearts of her friends and passengers to become a better undine, while being healed by the love and friendship of Akari and Alicia-sama!

The Secret of Haruka Kotoura 03 - The Invasion is Called Off
For the first 16 or so minutes, this was probably the happiest episode of the series. Haruka's not the best singer (though Kanemoto's pretty good normally) was a lot of fun, and that she sang the opening theme made it better. Wonder if that version (or a more normal cover) will be released at some point in the future. I can understand why Haruka feels the way she does about this crisis of faith (even if I'm surprised it's happening in episode three. Normally these things begin around 10 or so), but I don't think this is the sort of show that will ever allow things to get too bad. Look at Yoshihisa. They kept most of the fight offscreen, and he sees the silver lining even in having a hospital stay. He gets to see some cute nurses and recover, and then he should be back to normal in no time. Being a "nice guy" and being generally optimistic aren't bad character traits. Even Hiyori's not nearly as bad as initial fan reaction seemed to suggest. She just got caught up in the heat of the moment, said things without thinking, and is capable of feeling sympathy as much as anybody else. The color palette remains bright, and so does the future. Any preview that ends with Haruka smiling can only mean good things to come. |

Ep 3 is the mirror image of Ep 1 in tone. Happy fun for the first part, soul crushing despair for the last part. I kept looking for a certain Gen U. to be in the credits. Unfortunately, the primary event in this episode was spoiled for me from another source, so the end didn't have as much impact as it should have.
Spoiler for 3:

i've waited 3 episodes to see what was this series really about, but so far it has turned into a good surprise, i really enjoy the contrast between the dark and ligth hearthness of this series, i thought it was something just for the first episode, and characters seem deep and interesting, so far this is one of the most compelling series this season.

Manaba & Kotoura. Nice pair.
Going to the club room alone was maybe not the best idea. Kotoura's mind reading ability is not always a good thing. Still, those two really fit in the club ^^ Moritani's jealousy went too far this time...

Kotoura then shows up and tells everyone who tries to make a contract about what he isn't telling them.
And so, Kyubey's evil plans were foiled. I sort of mentioned this idea, only having Kotoura infiltrate criminal organizations as an undercover officer. |

Manabe beating up four gfys. "But it's a good thing." is, what he said. He needed someone to beat up?
At first, I thought, that this series is working in arcs and that Kotoura would now move into another town with new characters. But phew! the preview shows, that Manabe will still lead.

That's true, but one is simply curious, right? I found the singing of Kotoura hilliarious. Obviously, they wouldn't let her sing, like in the OP. I have seen a simillar scene in Kannagi, where she sings a great OP song, but sings very lousy in the karaoke.

oh man.
Moritani, no idea why the random thugs always fall for these things. The guys seemed like regular people, but they always get tricked into these beatdowns. Even if they had marital art history, its annoying. Kotoura moving away at the end left me in a WTF state. The preview was there so she probably comes back after Manabe drags her back, but still damn, unexpected direction.

I like how this show appears to follow well-worn paths, then goes off in an unexpected direction. For most of this episode, I began to wonder if the writers had decided to leave behind the more difficult material and focus the rest of the story on more conventional comedic and romantic themes. We see many of the standard items of high school romantic comedies like the uncomfortable embarrassment of young love, making your boyfriend a bento, etc. Then all of sudden it comes to a very different end.
I'm having trouble seeing how this story works as a 4-koma. I would think that format doesn't lend itself to the depth of characterization that we see in the anime. It takes a long time to develop meaningful characters in that format. Charles Schultze was a genius at that sort of thing, but he had many years to give the Peanuts characters their distinctive personalities. One small thing I enjoy is when we see Muroto's eyes flash behind his glasses. It happened once this episode, and I believe once in the previous installment. Plus his seiyuu, Shimono Hiro, has a great voice. Turns out his first role was voicing Kamina Ayato, the lead in RahXephon. More recently he seems to appear mostly in high-school comedies. I'd love to hear him work in a dramatic role, perhaps opposite someone else with a rich voice like Sakurai. Shimono is appearing in a josei adaptation called Karneval later this year. It sounds sufficiently intriguing that I'll keep an eye out for it. The cast includes Ono Daisuke and Endo Aya who "caught my ear" as Yurika in Sakamichi no Apollon. I can't say I'm in love with those character models, though.

Yet another great episode!
I figured Yuriko and Daichi were close childhood friends but I never would've thought they were that close. Looks to me like we have another pairing on our hands. Speaking of pairings in case anyone didn't get it before Kotoura x Manabe is pretty much set in stone now. It's shame that Moritani just couldn't let them be though and now she suffer from the weight of her guilt. But from the preview it looks like everything will work out anyway so no worries Manabe will track her down and bring her back.
