Actually this is starting to remind me of Gohan vs Cell. Gohan gets overconfident and it costs him dearly.

Because he can sense no reiatsu coming from Ichigo, so he can't say it's because Ichigo's spirit pressure trumps his own. So, he assumed Ichigo used all his power to go steroids on him.
