On the television series, the Newsroom. In a recent episode this was the last piece of dialog:

The human brain is a curious thing; by default we think backwards, trying to bend reality to fit what we believe. And it takes serious training to reverse this, usually no less than years of education. At this point I no longer think it is possible to make insane people sane again. We can only be glad they are the minority and will naturally die off on their own. The rest of the country is trying to live their lives in reality. On that note, Susan Rice dropped out. That's unfortunate. Not just for Rice, but for the GOP finding a NEW way to make the government dysfunctional. Simply reject all appointments of anyone and everyone for no reason. McCain should be ashamed of himself. Selling what's left of his soul like that.

I'm really not surprised though that there are many on the web calling him a liar and using faux logic or the such while never bothering to talk about what was even said only that it's all "wrong" and that everyone has gotten the Tea Party "all wrong".
Or my favorite "What about the Liberals?". News flash, this isn't about the Liberals it's about the Tea Party. Wish they would stop pointing fingers at others and look to their own house first. |

So what is the "liberal agenda"? All that I can think of are broad things like "equality and fairness for all," or "preservation of the environment." There isn't a particularly strict agenda, and it's not like all "liberals" feel strongly about every topic. There are splinter groups within splinter groups. I also find this mirrored in politics. I've heard some Republican voters criticize the Democrats for being inefficient or "wasting" consolidations of power. It seems like that's because the Democrats have a broad agenda, but they disagree on how best to achieve it and what aspects should be prioritized. They discuss and argue over it. This specifically came up with the "blue dog Democrats" shortly after Obama won his first term for the president. The Republicans, by comparison, seem to get a directive from their leadership structure and then they all vote together on it. Now that the power is split more evenly both sides are largely voting along party lines to counter each other, but over the past 10-20 years it seems to me that there have been more instances of Democrats "stepping out of line" than Republicans. That could just be my memory, though; I haven't counted instances.

Obama just publicly stated that he holds the position of a 1980's moderate Republican, in a response to claims of him being a socialist.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/1...n_2300998.html Once again, Obama is telling us something everyone already knows. That we discussed in this thread recently; that Progressives really don't have a voice in America. That the option of a voter is between Moderate Conservative party and a batshit insane Far Fright party. The Left isn't voting Obama because he is progressive, but that the GOP is downright frightening. It is a surprise that Obama admitted it. But it IS true. Guess he decided that truth might be what we need in this world these days, even though those on the Left are powerless to do anything about it.

Please do not delude yourself, it will hurt really bad in the long run. He just wishes to gain the support of a small percentage of republicans that have come to realize that the GOP is mad as a hatter. As you have said, the left can either support Obama or oppose the democrats in key issues (like Michael Moore did in 2000, now how did that ended?).

Really, we are waiting for the GOP to disintegrate. When it occurs, THEN the Progressives can just split off the Democrats on their own to make a new Left party.

Mark my words, One Piece will end before the GOP self-destructs, 47% is too high a percentage. But for academic purposes lets say it disbands today, no democrat politician is going to leave if there isn't a real party waiting to welcome them. But TBT I do not see today any indications that a new party in the left is taking form in the USA, I see some clowns talking about taking down wall street and what not, but until said theoretical party has at least one seat on the legislative branch, it is not a real political party.

What could happen is that the moderates within the GOP finally say enough is enough to the nutjobs (or the nutjobs kick the moderates tot he curb). The moderates would then join the Democrats which would further pull that party to the right. (As has been happening for a while anyway.) At that point, the more leftists within the Democrats would start feeling unwelcome. |

The Dems would hold together for as long as the GOP does. Very symbiotic.

Actually, the xkcd image above points to a key element that's missing in this picture: whenever the Democrats lose ground, it is the "centrist" (for the rest of the world: conservative) Democrats who lose, while progressive seats are generally safe. In other words, they are the backbone of the Democratic Party, though they have to compromise with their conservative party brethren if they want to have their party be the majority, and they are much more used to the notion of compromise than the far right. The American center is inherently unstable.
[/although the xkcd image itself is full of problems the deeper it goes back in time. I can just imagine the facepalms from American political history experts for having to define the Federalists as either Left or Right in the modern sense.] |

It will be a rallying cry that will do damage to any politician dumb enough to back it. Dianne is obsolete, her thinking is obsolete, and her "solutions" to this issue are obsolete. No matter how much her district may love her, I think her age is showing and it's time to retire Madame Senator. Notice how the shooting last night is being swept under the proverbial rug. More than 50 shots fired at Fashion Island mall; suspect held http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la...,3525149.story But that was in California where they've had an assault weapon and high-cap mag ban since the 1990s, so that one doesn't count.
