Canvas 3 ~The Silver Portrait~ (PC/18+)

(This is a thread for discussing F&C's recently-released new entry in the Canvas series, Canvas 3. Key information will be highlighted in the first post, which will be expanded as information becomes available. If you have any information to add, please post!)

Canvas3 ~白銀のポートレート~
Produced by: F&C FC01
Genre: School Romance ADV
Release Date: 2009-03-20
Price: 9,800 Yen (LE), 18,800 Yen (Complete Box incl. Canvas 1 & 2)
Int'l Availability: ErogeShop, HobbySearch, or various proxy services

Story Premise:
The protagonist, Manabu Yamabuki, is a second-year student and President of the Art Club who wants to follow his dream of becoming an artist, but his father is opposed to it. So, in order to gain his father's approval, he needs to win an upcoming art contest, but is having a hard time deciding on a motif. That's when he happens to meet the school idol, first-year student Rina Asato, who joins the art club by chance, and his school life begins to change. The other main heroines are Ryou Nagahoshi (Manabu's childhood friend and fellow second-year student and art club member, in charge of cameras), Yusa Akebi (a tsundere ojou-sama-type third-year student, and Art Club Vice-President), Nanami Chigusa (the clumsy but well-intentioned Art Club Advisor that everyone calls "Nana-sensei"), and Renge Yamabuki (the protagonist's younger sister, and first-year student).

Screenshots: (more available at the official site linked above)
Spoiler:

Other Interesting Tidbits: (more to come)
  • The lead illustrator, director, and much of the writing staff of D.C. II were recruited to work on this game.
  • The game's OP, "Kono koe ga todoitara", along with the ED, "Hoshi no Pulse", are sung by Eufonius. (Amazon CD link)
  • The two-disk soundtrack being released on April 8th also includes the image songs for all the main heroines (short video clips on the main site). (Amazon CD link)

Yusa looks like they just took Ellis and dyed her hair orange

Except for the complete personality change as well -- she's now a tsundere! At first glance, I suppose the two stories I'm most eager to explore would be both Yusa and Rina, since they seem quite connected to the central theme. All of the characters seem very much the embodiment of stereotypes, but that works for me -- it's what they do with the story that causes the personalities to shine. Looking forward to giving the game a try.

Also, I want to say that I really like the OP (which isn't surprising, though, because I generally like all eufonius stuff) -- they have a streaming version and downloads on the site. And finally, I also really like the voices -- they really brought together a lot of the best VAs for this game (which, again, isn't surprising, since this has "designed for mass-market success" written all over it).

The only one VA I know is Kazane, don't know the others one yet.

lol yea I'm interested in Rina and Yusa too,...but more for their character stereotypes than the story since I don't know what the story is at all

I'm just hoping someone translates a patch for it or an anime of it comes out relatively soon.

I added some details about the plot based on what I could piece together from various sources. Seems like a pretty sensible, if straightforward, overall plot for an art school story. Trying to find your "motif" was a big theme in both of the first two Canvas series to, so this story doesn't look to change the formula all that much (except this time there isn't the "long-lost love" angle Canvas 2 had). They've changed the dynamics a little compared to Canvas 2 by making the protagonist a student again (like the original Canvas), but he's still the Art Club President.

Well I don't know why, but I keep wondering what kind of reference to canvas 1 and 2, like how they did in Canvas 2

Well, yeah, I'm definitely expecting some cameos. It's somewhat of a tradition now, plus it's still in the same school so they can't just pretend that there's no continuity. We'll see, though...

I wanna see what happened to Ellis!

I wonder why there are never any "true" harem endings (i.e. with multiple women)

Well, yeah... Canvas has got to be one of the more "restrained" bishoujo game series in that sense. Every ending is always a "true love" ending, and the adult content is always a very minor part of the story. So, yeah... not expecting any harem endings in this series.

As for Elis... I'm assuming this game probably takes place a few years after the last game, so it wouldn't surprise me to see her mentioned, but I think the "canon ending" is that she (and Hiroki) are in Paris.

I don't think I'm gonna find the time to play this when there's so many other ones coming out in March too. I'm still making my way through Flyable Heart.

I would be extremely happy if they mentioned an accomplished romance novelist by the name of Naka Nogiwa.

Hmm... I guess no one ever posted about it much. I personally still have it in my unfinished queue at this point, but do plan to get to it... some day... I know a few other people who played it, but I guess it largely went by unnoticed by most of the VN community.
