Apparently RAR compresses better than ZIP, and from my own backups I can see the same trend...

Yeah, 7zip is a great extractor. It does just about any files that are compressed: zip, 7z, rar, etc.

ooh dear, this is making me laugh
.rar extension is not an audio file, rar is simply a file type in which you put other files so your audio is inside it
takes less space and makes it easier to send to people (like the trunk in which you put your luggage or envelope for your letters)

simple solution
install winrar:
http://www.winrar.nl/
(its free)

open your file and simply unpack what is inside
trust me when you see it you'll figure it out

AHHHHHHHHH Thank you so much. I thought I could just extract the files like a zip file and when I couldn't I thought it was a codec issue, but didn't realize I needed a program to extract it for me....Thanks a million I can finally now listen to the vampire knight OST 2 ~..)

You know, I've actually never done it, but I'm sure I've heard my friends claim that they can play video in .zip files without unzipping first. To someone who's used to doing that, they would expect to be able to do so for .rar files as well, and apparently you can't.

foobar2000. Just drag and drop to foobar. Now you can play files in the archive. Then again, I forgot whether I added a plug-in for this to work, or it works from the beginning (I threw quite many randoms plugins to it's components folder). Download foobar2000 and it's plugins here

[EDIT]
Only tested zip and rar
