How is it ever possible for a character to be so obnoxious that they become likable. There are some characters I find entertaining because of this but it seems these types of characters are really hit or miss.

I don't really know, honest. The closest character currently I write to fit that is Saruyama, which is annoying as hell but overall a decent and loved character. However, he is a sidekick, so such reception is expected.

Fr some reason, I'm not keen writing about 'special day' chapter as separate, only if it's related to plot.

Its really depend on the purpose of flying at that speed, look how Cecilia casually talk with Ichika. As Eras put it, even talk about weather is appropriate if you're not in emergency. if you are, then just talk about on topic things.

It's during the race. Ichika just barely kept himself from smashing into the sidelines thanks to the intervention of Charlotte. Charlotte Makes small talk as she comes up beside him. Ichika does a doubletake at her presence. She goes angel of death at his "almost unhappy" reception of her. Ichika somehow notices and amends quickly. Charlotte cools down to normal. Then that's where I left off.

Just continue with them talking little about the race condition, then something else. For example, what if they work together to get rid of other rivals. Ichika is frightened, but he agreed so long as it won't be too dangerous.

Relationship EXP + 3?

No... I can make Ichika likable to me. But that makes him run parallel to Gentarou in so many ways that I don't want. Gentarou is the hot blooded hero. Ichika is supposed to be the rational one. I want to portray him as someone who grows into confidence. But sometimes I feel my portrayal pushes him into recklessness @_@

also, if someone dominates a personal IS pilot with only a regular Uchigane by taking advantage of the rules. Would that be bad-ass normal?

Then that makes you like Gentarou archetype more. This normal BTW, I like Rito more than I like Ichika. Though both of them has been changed form canon portrayal, Ichika is downright OOC sometimes.

All I said, never sacrifice his role because you can't just ditch the protagonist. You can change him as you wish. (I regularly omit major character besides the protagonist though)

Yes, it's downright insane, considering their portrayal in canon, default configuration Uchigane is a piece of shit for a pro pilot (shown in my fic as well). You can adjust their parameter but you can only go so far before the need of parts customization. The most important would be spare armaments.

I'm trying to do something like improving Ichika's attittude about his IS rather than improving his IS. I'm sure Izuru is trying to steer away from the standard archetype of how the machine is a blitz oriented fighter but... that's about all I can see it as.

Best freudian slip ever.

In TLR Stratos, Ichika is going so far as rehauling the machine (incomplete ByakuShiki) himself before Tabane can get a hand on it. It become a lightning bruiser close combat unit, at the cost of endurance (due to compact design = smaller battery). Simply put, it never had Yukihira or Reiryaku Byakuya.

The curve of her lips once more pleasant instead of cryptically menacing. “Yes!”, she chirped happily. “Ichika, we're in the middle of a race you know. You should stop daydreaming or you might get hurt.”, Charlotte chided. Those words meant a lot to Ichika. Charlotte was the only one of the girls to outright show concern for him. The others showed concern too, but they were actually more painful than the consequences of not heeding them. Ichika properly returned her smile this time and nodded. “Yeah, I will.”. Flying a little closer, he told her, “You really saved me back there. I would've crashed if it- Wait! I wasn't daydreaming!”. “I see”, Charlotte's eyes suddenly closed into those happy crescents of death again. Ichika feared for his life. Hadn't he just diffused that situation moments ago? “It must have been quite a daydream for you to be so red over it.”, the French girl's normally gentle voice somehow felt scathing despite no change in tone. “What was it about?”. “Oh um... uh...”, Ichika fumbled in his brain on how to explain what he was thinking about without telling her anything that would make her mad. Lie? No, he hated lying. Selective dialogue? That could work but he had to make it short. Okay so summarize it without making himself sound like a total pervert wierdo or letting her know it was about Laura. Last time Charlotte caught wind of himself and Laura in what could only be interpreted on his side as a misunderstanding, he was staring down the barrel of two IS grade Rain of Saturday shotguns. Intinctively, he spoke the one word that covered all his earlier thoughts. “Intimacy.”. Charlotte's eyes snapped open and Ichika swore she lost balance for a dangerous moment. She herself turned red at that open declaration. opinion please XD
