Another straight adaptation from the manga chapters, but with some rather nice action scenes. The talkie scenes in between are really starting to feel cheap, but Nakamura saves the day at the end with a nice short piece of action animation that will lead into a much more action packed fight next week. Hopefully he'll be animating that too.

On a side note, there's another element of censorship this week, plot-wise. In the manga, young Chrona was asked to kill her pet bunny, but in the anime they changed it into a baby dragon. Lol.

This change was actually foreshadowed back in episode 15 where it showed a showed a picture of the baby dragon where in the manga Chrona mentions the bunny (although the audience wouldn't know what she was talking about). It ended even more of a change than I thought though. Defeating an aggressive dragon is extremely different from killing your harmless pet bunny, character development-wise. I guess they're afraid of kids imitating it or something. Ah well, there goes my hoped for "rabbit for dinner" line from Medusa.

Anyway great episode. Animating the fight scene(s) really does bring a whole new perspective into play. Maka using witch-hunt like that looked stunning in animated form.

But what do you know, she has now embraced the dark side and has turned into a monkey...

Other than that, it was a good, though wordy, episode. Hopefully next week will be all action.

changeing the bunny to a dragon wasn't too bad but you do feel like it loses something.

Yeah was quite the shift when I was checking the manga for some rough translations. Would guess they were worried about people going after their pet bunnies. Protect the little guys . Good luck finding a dragon to go after and not getting yourself killed. Is a really big shift but still what a thing to be putting Chrona through since childhood. Time to hand out the worst parent award of the year to Medusa.

Maka and Soul did get into a bad spot there. Really seems like they should have left it to Black Star. Now the concerns about that black blood in Soul is coming up again. Maka putting hserlf into the insanity in order to try and win this one. Though really its a seriously dangerous gamble to be taking up. At least now they aren't in danger of losing. Though when her blood goes back to red could be a messy scene.

Why do all the main characters of all mangas have some crazy evil side?

One, it can be entertaining.

Two, in Soul Eater's case it's the mangka using the whole 'dark side of human nature' idea (though here it strikes me as lack of control and giving into desire rather than some inherent evil, but I could be wrong?).

Don't know if it counts in your other examples, but it's a good versus evil concept that can and does get a lot of mileage in anime (amongst other things, for that matter).

Something like that. The basic concept behind the Kishin seems to be "fear leads to a desire for power, which eventually leads to insanity."

What? A dragon instead of the bunny!? Nooo! It added so much more to Chrona's character development. T_T

Also, in the manga, Chrona slits her wrist to attack Maka in the beginning of their fight instead of the top of her hand. But that's something I KNEW they were going to change. :P
