So, we have your average teenage boy that is always trying to do the right thing, but ends up getting the short end of the stick. I mean, those kids were killing pigeons; someone had to stop them. Then again, it was not a good day for Rin, having to get into useless fights and all. Sad thing is that his brother is the start one that is going to a prestigious school while he is the brat who has a kind heart but rarely anyone see it. So, the guys at the church try to offer him some help by giving him a flier about a job wanting ad. Rin is forced to accept this due to pressure and wears his tuxedo improperly. So, at the job, be gets caught doing work that consists of hard labor, which he is apparently good at, due to his strength. Apparently, he is a good chef too, able to sell fried soba that the boss was trying to sell. After a good success, he gets the job, which makes everyone at the church happy. This does not last long, for he is able to see a spirit taking away Yui's scarf. Due to the trouble from the demon, he gets fired.

The next day comes, and Rin is just having one bad day to the next. Now, the same goon of guys want a piece of Rin. But there is something different about him, almost as if he is possessed by a demon. At the brink of the moment, Rin loses it, and unleashed his powers. The father comes in and exorcised the kid, sending the demon away. And then, the hard truth: you are not a human; you are Satan's child. This really is not a good day for Rin.

It's explained in the first chapter of the manga so I'd imagine it'll come up in the next episode.

So, got around to seeing this once it hit all the US streams today and I liked it pretty well. It looks nice (well, except for that ED, which I had seen before I watched the episode, that was just strange) and Rin is rather adorkable, I'll keep watching it!

You know after glancing at the initial impressions I fully expected to come in here and agree with people saying this should've had more action in the first episode. But after watching the first episode I really, really liked what I saw and appreciated the time it took to build things up. I completely agree with Guardian Enzo that the emotions in the episode were far stronger than what we usually see in the genre.

Personal opinion aside I still agree that they should've worked some more action into this but I liked what happened. Anyway Accelerator's VA Nobuhiko Okamoto seems like an inspired choice for Rin, really liked that music piece that played when Rin was telling that little girls father to believe her... but god damn that ED song and sequence was horrible, thank god that it will be gone by the time the second cour starts. Does not suit the show at all....

Well, I'm quite happy about how this turned out, being such a fan of the manga. I was afraid the adaption would butcher the source material.

Spoiler for Ep 1:

Wow, the budget for this show is insane. It looks at least as good as AnoHana does and that's saying something. Colors are crisp, there aren't many (if any) moments where characters are horribly off model, and motion remains consistent and clear. It's definitely a nice surprise to see so much money put into this show.

I'm a little surprised they dragged out the first chapter of the manga like that. I realize that the big battle against Satan should be reserved for the second episode instead of cramming it in the first like the manga did but it seemed a little dragged out. The scene with the little girl, in particular, seemed unnecessary but I suppose its purpose was to introduce the world of demons.

So little Yukio this episode. I'm hoping my favorite badass is going to make a stronger appearance next episode (if not in episode three). But I liked Rin's adventures and the job he worked at. The thug he fights here looks much more threatening than in the manga, I have to admit.

The little cotton spores aren't as cute in the anime as they were in the manga, though. Small complaint, it's really the only one I have for this episode.

the first chapter has about 60 pages, subsequently 40ish. I think it will be 1.5 episodes per chapter from now on.

They'll probably throw in filler every episode to flesh out the story though, which I have no problem with as long as it's good like this episode and adds to the story and isn't just meaningless fluff or fanservice.

No comments on the OP since I missed that >_<. The rest of the episode was good. They added an invasion scene before the big event, which did well to give Shiro more time to be badass as well as the rest of the abbey folks getting a moment to shine. They did the Gehenna Gate tragedy well. The emotional impact of the scene was nicely conveyed. I like how Shirou looked at his hand after slapping Rin just before he got posessed. Yukio showing up during the aftermath was also a neat touch. The voice work was excellent and the scene with Mephisto made me feel like laughing along with him. Kamiya Hiroshi is the prefect guy for trolls. Can't wait for next week!

Okay, it was most likely the right choice not to pack everything into the first episode, since it made for a great end to the introduction arc. I was worried as to whether we could expect really neat animation from A-1 Pictures, but it looks like we do have some good animators on board - the fights actually moved really well! Not to mention the shiny budget still showing...

The animation to the OP is somewhat jarring (animating everything in the beginning and the end but barely in the middle?), though it still did its job to get me excited. So did the preview, bring on all the fantastic side characters! Kamiyan was all kinds of excellent for Mephisto Pheles, I'm curious to hear all the other seiyuu now, especially Yusa Kouji (<3) as Renzou (<3).

Yeah, I agree with you. In particular I felt that walking segment was quite dull (and long). So much energy at the start just dissipated before suddenly jumping back to being energetic. Felt like the storyboarder didn't feel like adding more scenes into the OP and just dragged a few out.

Still a nice OP though =3.

I wasn't really worried with A-1s animation because it's clear this project is big for them, and most of the time they had some really good director on board the shows have been quite great in that regard. Episode 2 did not disappoint, either, with everything still looking mighty fine. It's great to see so many different movements and poses, and each and every one of them so well handled. The conversation with Mephisto in the end is a perfect example of that.

Anyway, after this episode I'm sure this is one of my favourite soundtracks in anime for a good while. Haven't been impressed a lot lately, but there's just so much variety here, and everything sounds so cool. I'm in love with the track that plays when Rin is having his conversation with Mephisto (crap, this scene is great, haha). And while we're at it, I found it weird having Kamiyan as Mephisto, because he didn't really sound like Kamiyan to me. I guess I was expecting something more along the lines of his SHAFT roles, so I was surprised. That and the fact I couldn't shake off the feeling that a character like Mephisto should be voiced by Akira Ishida. It's the Xellos effect, haha. Then again, Kamiyan sort of won me over with the over the top laugh when Rin tells them he wants to be an Exorcist. Great stuff there!

On a final note, I'm not too big a fan of the OP. The song felt very... confusing, it tries to do everything at the same time and keeps changing, and this reflected in the actual OP animation. The ED remains greatness, of course, although I guess we're not getting that full dance version any soon. Why have you forsaken me, A-1!

Overall, good episode, action packed and that's just the way I like them!
