[linux] OpenSUSE 11?
I have two OS in my laptop. One is XP and others is openSUSE 11 with KDE 4.0, and I want to play some anime in this Linux OS.
But I got some problems. First, I tried to install MPlayer with YaST, and it's success. But when I want to play any video files, MPlayer can't play it, and closed without any reason. (Crash) I don't have any clue to start investigating, though all have been run normally. My FLAC and MP3 song plays normally. And my X11 subsystem is in normal mode (not running with VESA). Can someone help me solve this case? Thanks for your help.

Have you installed all the codecs for mplayer? Free distributions like OpenSuSE can't offer them because they're encumbered by patents or run afoul of other intellectual property issues in some countries like the US.
Go to http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html and scroll down to the "Binary Codecs" area. Pick the appropriate file for your architecture and install it per the instructions. If you want to stay with the YaST packages and repositories, read http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_Ya...e_Repositories and follow the instructions there. It looks like the Packman repository contains what you need.

I'm not an OpenSuSE user, but I'd be surprised if ffmpeg is shipped in the stock images. It would be illegal to ship it into the US. It's not shipped by default in Ubuntu or Fedora for that reason; you have to obtain it from third-party repositories. My copy of ffmpeg for Fedora comes from Livna.

Seiji is right, free distros usually don't package ffmpeg due to the stupid US patent system.
I can't remember when was the last time I played around with OpenSUSE, but if this is your first experience with a Linux distro, I'd seriously recommend against it. I had enough headaches as it is today trying to get gcc installed without using an X display in one of our client's SLES servers--I'd suggest any distro with a decent package manager and not the completely illogical crap that is YaST (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora) over OpenSUSE at any time. You have no idea how much I longed for an apt-get or yum today. No idea.

Hmm... then Ubuntu probably ships it with the mplayer package?
If so, I can't remember why I couldn't watch things properly without that package. It's been ages since I installed mplayer without using Ubuntu's "non-free" repositories.

It's built statically in the Livna version. Running "rpm --rebuild" against the source RPM shows the following entries from ./configure:
Checking for FFmpeg libavutil ... yes (static) Checking for FFmpeg libavcodec ... yes (static) Checking for FFmpeg libavformat ... yes (static) Checking for FFmpeg libpostproc ... yes (static) I actually have the binary libraries for all of these on this system already, but the mplayer source ignores that fact and builds them again. I presume that's to ensure consistency. I was puzzled at first since "rpm -q --requires mplayer" didn't list any of the FFmpeg libraries as a dependency. As for those other codecs, some people might actually want to watch a show in one of those "dumb" proprietary formats like WMV, Quicktime, or Real. Probably not you though, Fluff.
