Oh God, it's all there - sunrise porn, bird-in-flight porn, train porn, snow porn... Vintage Shinkai. What a pimp.

Sadly I do believe the event planned for the movie is canceled due to the recent quakes, so we'll all have to wait until things have settled down.

Ok the old premiere date is very soon. Sadly, like people above already posted, it will be delayed.

Do we have any new informations about that?
(I dont see any news on animenewsnetwork.com, though)

So uhh.... prepare myself for another 'loss'?

Goddamit, I don't even know why I torture myself watching Shinkai's works. Must be the gorgeous art.

I just saw it in the theater.

Yes, this movie is full of loss. Or rather, it's ABOUT death and grief.

Good God, Man - give us more than that! Where does it rank in the Shinkai pantheon?

Can this guy make a film about something else for a change?

You make it sound like that's a bad thing.

Besides, while his films may have similar themes and atmosphere I find them different enough from each other that it doesn't come off as recycling the same storyline. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how he tackles the subject of 'death', which is something that wasn't present in his previous films.

Shinkai said that his previous movies dealt with loss and separation, but this movie would be about getting over it.

I haven't seen all of his movies, but comparing them is almost unfair.

This movie is 110 minutes long, and had a real budget and full theatrical release in Japan.

So yeah, it's better in almost all respects, unless you count the length and size of story against it.

The main complaint that is said is that the character designs and animation is very similar to various Ghibli films. Shin/Shun is like Haku, Asuna and Mimi are like Nausicaa and whatever Nausicaa's little creature was named, and Morisaki is sort of slightly like Musuka.
The ancient society of Agartha is a bit like Laputa, and the Izuko are very similar to a human sized berserk, non-armored version of Eva-01.

But I'm not so sure "that character reminds me of XXX" is that bad a complaint.
The plotting and story are very tight, and the characters are all well written.

Just for full disclosure I have translated the film for Comix Wave Films for screenings at international film festivals, so I've seen it in various stages during its production as well.

Yes, that's a good way of putting it. The loss happens in the first part of the movie, but the main story is a journey "to say goodbye", as the tag line says.

That doesn't sound bad at all.

Anyone complaining of "this char reminds me of <insert anyone here>" is clearly forgetting that this IS anime we're talking about. Running into similar characters is like running into hipsters at Starbucks; it happens all the time and you should expect it because, as unfortunate as it may seem, it has become the norm. It's sort of the inevitable anyway, because sometimes certain stories can only be told with certain kinds of characters.

Anyway, it's execution and how well-rounded the characters are (as well as if they properly and sensibly tie in with the story or not) that matters in the end. As long as nobody is a [blatant] toss-away character, then gold stars all around, yes?

You still have time to fly to Japan and see it in theaters.

Also, it'll probably be screened at Cannes if you wanna score a ticket there .

Awesome, thank you! I don't see any of those things as negative at all. I haven't seen any reviews yet, so starved for info...
