All About Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮ハルヒ) - 2012 Edition

This is an introductory thread regarding the series that is Haruhi Suzumiya (also known as Haruhiism). This thread is not designed to be exhaustive; it is here to cover the basics of Haruhi Suzumiya and the SOS団 without 'spoiling' too much of the plot or premise of the series.

This thread is divided up into sections; the first post will detail most FAQs about the series/anime/movie, the second post is a brief synopsis of each important character , the third post will detail the novels that the series was based from as well as the mangas that the series has spun off, the fourth post is an introduction to the "genderbending" phenomenon mostly aided by this forum, the fifth post will detail the events surrounding the three year wait for the re-airing, and the final two posts are a detailed timeline of all events in the series that contains novel spoilers.

A great amount of thanks go out to sophismata, Catgirls, Sushi-Y, NeoSam, and Kinny Riddle for providing the first "All About Haruhi Suzumiya" thread. Your efforts for getting information to the fanbase in 2006 about the series are still appreciated today.

While I have made an effort to hide or avoid any spoilers in this document, it is possible that mistakes have been made, and thus I do not guarantee that this thread will not reveal information you might consider "spoily".

You have been warned.

The Haruhi Suzumiya and SOS団 FAQ - Revision Two

--------------------------------------------------------

Section One - General Haruhi Suzumiya Information

What/Who is Haruhi Suzumiya?

Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮ハル ヒ) is a series of novels that are published by Kadokawa Shouten in a imprint entitled "Sneaker Bunko" (スニーカー文庫). Prior to February 2011, there was a literary magazine of the same name with published short stories and chapters prior to release. Haruhi Suzumiya is the titular character in this series.

What is Suzumiya Huruhi no Yuustsu, then?

This is both the title of the anime, manga, and the first volume of the Haruhi Suzumiya light novel series. It translates to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and can also be written as 涼 宮ハルヒの憂鬱 .

What versions of Haruhi Suzumiya exist?

Haruhi Suzumiya, as previously mentioned, exists as a serialised novel series. Due to the popularity of the novels, the story of the SOS Brigade has been adapted as an anime, a movie based from the anime series, and a manga; one of which is likely to be the reason you're here.

How many manga are there?!

There was a brief incident involving an earlier manga adaptation of Haruhi Suzumiya, but it has been dusted away. There have been 15 volumes published of the new series in Japan. There are also a parody manga entitled The Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya (Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuutsu), a fan-created parody work entitled Nyorōn Churuya-san, and a spinoff entitled The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan which is based off of the fourth novel.

What is the SOS団 (SOS Brigade)?

The SOS Brigade is a high-school club, formed by Haruhi Suzumiya, whose goal is "to find aliens, time travelers, and espers and play with them!" SOS Brigade stands for Sekai wo Ooini moriagerutame no Haruhi Suzumiya no Dan; this translates roughly to Haruhi Suzumiya's Brigade for Saving the World by Overloading it with Fun. The members of the SOS Brigade include Haruhi Suzumiya (leader), Kyon, Mikuru Asahina (secretary and unofficial mascot), Yuki Nagato (president of the literary club), and Itsuki Koizumi (vice commander).

What type of genre is the series?

The series mixes in many genres, but it's mostly classified as a science fiction comedy series in Japan.

What's up with the official website, http://www.haruhi.tv?

This is the homepage of the SOS Brigade as it is shown in the series. There is a link to the "fansite" where most news is posted about the series near the bottom.

--------------------------------------------------------

Section Two - Haruhi Suzumiya TV Anime Information - May Contain Spoilers

What's this about a "broadcast order" and a "chronological order"?

The first season (2006 episodes) were intentionally broadcast out of chronological order. The episodes animated were one novel and short stories from three other novels. The staff wanted to end the season with the end of the novel to provide a conclusion for the season, so it was broadcast last. Many fans liked the broadcast order and prefer it over the chronological order.

But what the second season? It's 28 episodes long!

Actually, what's been called the "second season" is a re-airing of the entire series in complete chronological order (meaning 14 new episodes were added to fill in the gaps between the 2006 episodes for chronological continuity). This allows future stories to be animated in chronological order without worrying about missing parts.

How should I watch the show then?

Many people have differing opinions, but the main school of thought is to go ahead and watch the 2009 "re-airing" in chronological order. This way you don't get confused with later episodes and where they fit in the timeline. We typically use this order when referring to an episode on this forum. This is made a little difficult as one of the fansub groups popularized the 2-xx numbering of the new episodes, so the following numbers are a bit jumbled, but this is how most fan groups number the episodes (The DVD order is more correct, but it has Episode 00 out of order).

Quote:
1-02 - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I

1-03 - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya II

1-05 - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya III

1-10 - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya IV

1-13 - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya V

1-14 - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya VI

1-04 - The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya

2-01 - Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody

1-07 - Mysterique Sign

1-06 - Lone Island Syndrome (First Part)

1-08 - Lone Island Syndrome (Final Part)

2-02 - Endless Eight

2-03 - Endless Eight

2-04 - Endless Eight

2-05 - Endless Eight

2-06 - Endless Eight

2-07 - Endless Eight

2-08 - Endless Eight

2-09 - Endless Eight

2-10 - The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya I

2-11 - The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya II

2-12 - The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya III

2-13 - The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya IV

2-14 - The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya V

1-01 - The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00

1-12 - Live a Live

1-11 - The Day of Sagittarius

1-09 - Someday in the Rain

Are there seriously 8 Endless Eight episodes?!

Yes there are 8 episodes. The middle six episodes share the exact same script while the first and last differ from the rest. Each episode is animated differently with some events differing. It is one of the most polarizing events in the fanbase with people both liking it and hating it. If you want to skip it, do watch 1,2,and 8 to get the gist of the situation.

This show is licensed, how can I watch it?

Crunchyroll has acquired the R1 rights to stream the episodes. They've put a the episodes up in the broadcast (2006) and DVD (2009 episodes) order.

If you would like a hard copy, check your choice anime supplier and see if there's a DVD release of the 2006 episodes. The new episodes finished being released on DVD in Japan during March 2010, with a North American release in September 2010, and an UK release and Australian release in 2011 as well. The series was released on Blu-Ray in Japan only with the official English subtitles and dub in November 2010 with all 28 episodes as they were aired in the above order. There are no plans for it to be released internationally.

--------------------------------------------------------

Section Three - The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya Movie information

There's a movie from the series?!

Yes, after "Someday in the Rain" was aired in 2009, there was a teaser trailer shown for "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" which would start showing in Spring 2010.

How long is the movie?

The movie is 2 hours, 42 minutes, and 53 seconds long. Yes, that's a long movie for a short novel, but the pacing of the movie works very well and according to reviews it feels shorter than that.

So when can we see it?

The movie started showing in theatres on February 6th, 2010 and was released on DVD/Blu-Ray on December 18th, 2010 in Japan. The movie has been released in Hong Kong, Taiwan, North America, UK, and Australia in 2011 on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Did it do well in Japan?

The movie grossed over 800 million yen while in theatres and sold over 130,000 DVD/BDs (officially, with a print run of 200,000 unofficially). It's been a surprise hit to theatres and has even gotten some critical acclaim.

--------------------------------------------------------

Section Four - Other Useless Important information

What happened three years ago?
The big event that triggered everything happening has not been revealed. Much speculation has been done, but nothing official has come out. The whole "three years" time became very significant as a marketing ploy with Kadokawa.

What other days are important?
The dates July 7th and December 18th are very key points in the timeline. Kadokawa released series information on those dates in the past, but new dates to keep an eye on are December 30th, January 2nd, and the first couple of weeks in February for news now. Officially, news will first come out in magazines prior to events like this.

Why did (event) happen?
There's a very good reason for that. Typically it will be revealed in the future, but there are still some unanswered questions plaguing fans today.

What's Kyon's real name?
It hasn't been given to the audience yet. We've got hints throughout the series, but it's never stated.

What else has come out due to the anime series' popularity?
Haruhi has spun off many music CDs and two live concerts (one rock and one classical), 7 games for the PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii and DS, numerous fan and artbooks, plus many more fanworks.

What other sites should I keep an eye on?
Besides the Official fansite, Kyoto Animation has their own Haruhi site, and it's always a good eye to keep an eye on Kadokawa's series listing to keep track of events. A lot of news will come through the monthly publications, so those will be second-hand from Japan. Usually news will be posted in the relevant thread, so watch for those.

Important Characters in the Haruhi Suzumiya series:
These are the most popular and important characters in the anime series. After watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya III, the spoilers for the Brigade will not affect you anymore. Beneath the applicable characters is a link to the discussion thread for each character. These threads do contain spoilers from the novels, so be warned.

The SOS Brigade

The Creater/Leader: Haruhi Suzumiya

Haruhi is a first year student at North High who begins her school career by stating "I have no interest in normal humans. If any of you are aliens, time travelers, sliders, or espers come find me. That is all." She refuses to converse with anyone until Kyon chances himself to talk with her during breaks. She gets the inspiration to begin the SOS Brigade when Kyon gives her the idea. She is a very head-strong person who will always try to get her way, regardless if there is opposition.

Spoiler:

Discussion thread
Haruhi is voiced by Aya Hirano who has sung both main openings and contributed to both ending songs.

The "wallet of the Brigade": Kyon

Kyon also is a first year student at North High who gave Haruhi the idea for the SOS Brigade. He is most commonly late for all of their group outings and tends to be a procrastinator. He tries to keep a level head in the midst of Haruhi's rampages, though he does take the opportunity to enjoy the views from time to time (especially of Mikuru).

Spoiler:

Discussion thread
Kyon is voiced by Tomokazu Sugita.

The Leader of the Literature Club: Yuki Nagato

Yuki is a soft-spoken first year who is the sole member of the Literature Club. When Haruhi was looking for a clubroom, Yuki told her that they could use her room as long as she could read. She rarely speaks and when she does, it is typically short and to the point. Haruhi doesn't involve her as much as Mikuru in her outings, though Yuki typically comes along.

Spoiler:

Discussion thread
Yuki is voiced by Minori Chihara, who has contributed to both ending themes as well as the theme song for the movie.

The Secretary of the SOS Brigade and unofficial mascot: Mikuru Asahina

Mikuru is a second year student at North High who was kidnapped by Haruhi and forced to join the SOS Brigade. She used to be part of the calligraphy club until the kidnapping. Known to be an idol among the school, she is very shy around the other girls in the brigade, especially when Haruhi is literally forcing her to dress in various outfits. She tends to have moments of clumsiness and ditziness, but is otherwise average in intelligence.

Spoiler:

Discussion thread
Mikuru is voiced by Yuko Gotou, who has sung the opening for "The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00" and contributed to both ending songs.

The Vice-President of the SOS Brigade: Itsuki Koziumi

Koizumi transferred to North High approximately a month into his first year. He was pulled into the brigade due to his "mysterious transfer student" status assigned by Haruhi. He tends to relax and let Haruhi do as she wishes. He always has a smile or smirk on his face while enjoying the time with the rest of the brigade. He helps to plan trips for the brigade during vacations due to many family connections. Very philosophical and intelligent, he tends to know and theorize about various situations constantly.

Spoiler:

Discussion thread
Koizumi is voiced by Daisuke Ono.

Auxillary SOS Brigade members:

Tsuruya-san:
First introduced when Haruhi needed members for a baseball team, Tsuruya-san is a classmate and friend of Mikuru. She is a very energetic girl and has the ability to make anyone laugh.

Discussion thread
Tsuruya-san is a very popular character in the series and is the only non-SOS Brigade member to get a thread.

Taniguchi:
Has been in the same class as Haruhi for four straight years since the first year of middle school. He knows about her reputation and serves for background information on Haruhi. Has a habit of constantly thinking about girls, even going as far to rank all the first year girls (Ryoko Asakura is his top AA+). Is used when the SOS Brigade needs an extra body for an activity.

Kunikida:
An intelligent first-year who is in the same class as Kyon and Haruhi. He was friends with Kyon in middle school and provides background information about Kyon's middle school life. Is also used when the SOS Brigade needs an extra body.

Kyon's Sister:
A fifth-year in elementary school who was the cause of Kyon's nickname spreading around his friends. She is used more in the anime than in the novels, but was invited to various SOS Brigade activities.

Important people not affiliated with the SOS Brigade:

Ryoko Asakura:
The class representative for Kyon and Haruhi's class. She tries to get people to talk with Haruhi, but is constantly turned down. She's cheerful, intelligent, and outgoing, leading to become the most popular girl in the class. An absolutely flawless girl.

Emiri Kimidori:
An upperclassman who came to visit the SOS Brigade with a request to find her missing boyfriend.

Originally scheduled for 06/01/2007 but was removed for "unforeseen circumstances" and turned into two novels due to length. These two, combined with novel 9, form a trilogy length story.

From late January to December 2010, Kadokawa released a special panorama cover set of the first nine novels. The contents were exactly the same, only the covers switched.

It is unlikely that tenth novel onward will have alternate covers to match the rest of the panorama.

The novels have been licensed in North America by Hachette Book Group. Before licensing, there were fan translations by the group Baka-Tsuki which have now been taken down. When referring to novels that have not been released in English, it is typically these translations that are being used. Since they are a licensed material, no requests can be made for the fan translations.

The Mangas of Haruhi Suzumiya

There are a few manga series spawned by the Haruhi Suzumiya novels. The first was one that was horribly recieved by fans and will not be mentioned again. The second is published monthly by the "少年エース" (Shounen Ace) magazine published by Kadokawa. It has been collected into 15 volumes and has reached "The Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina" arc. The covers are listed below:

There is another manga published by Kadokawa in 少年エースthat is a parody of the series entitled "涼宮ハルヒちゃんの憂鬱" (Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuutsu or "The Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya"). It has been collected into six volumes:

There is another manga published by Kadokawa in 2008 in "コンプエース" (Completes) entitled "にょろーん、ちゅるやさん" (Nyoroon, Churuya-san) which introduces a small parody version of Tsuruya-san as "Churuya-san". It was collected into a single manga volume.

Finally, there is one last spinoff manga entitled "長門有希ちゃんの消失" (Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu, "The Disappearance of Yuki-chan Nagato") which started a monthly run in "ヤングエース" (Young Ace) in July 2009. It has been collected into three volumes:

The Genderbending of Haruhi Suzumiya

In 2008, the Haruhi fanbase was waiting for two very important events: the release of the tenth novel and the start date for the second season of the anime. Since there was a great amount of free time until either event started, someone had a great idea: what if the genders of the Haruhi franchise were swapped?

This led to one of the most popular threads on this forum: the Genderbending thread.

The thread was originally designed to change the text of the novels to fit the swap of genders, making changes to the storyline as needed to make sense of the new situation. Many members would assist the fan novel translation group Baka-Tsuki in creating these new stories. They can still be read on Baka-Tsuki's website for the genderbending twist.

Lately, what has been the aim of the group is a new idea: mixing the genderbending universe into a story with the main characters in the form of a visual novel game. Kaisos has been handling writing the script for the novel with various people assisting with editing and compiling the story together.

The projects are still being worked on and are always in need of people to assist.

There is also the Images thread to post favorite genderbending images (mostly since they were taking over the normal images thread).

Characters:

Kyon →"Kyonko"
While she is still called "Kyon" in the universe, she has been given the nickname "Kyonko" to distinguish her from the original character. She's the most popular switch with many people favoring the sarcastic tsundere-like character. She's commonly the target of the next character's wishes.

Haruhi Suzumiya → Haruki Suzumiya
Picture the wildest person you know. Turn that craziness up another ten levels and you have Haruki Suzumiya. He is always looking for strange situations and is as hot-blooded as your typical shounen hero. His only weakness: pony-tails.

Yuki Nagato → Yuuki Nagato
A soft-spoken gentleman who allows Haruki to take over the literary clubroom and turn it into his own SOS Brigade.

Mikuru Asahina → Mitsuuru Asahina
A shy and timid boy who looks very young. He's constantly being told by Haruhi how to become a man.

Itsuki Koizumi → Itsuko Koizumi
The typical AA+ rank girl who constantly flirts with Kyonko and assists Haruki in every task he sets out.

More information about the thread can be found in the thread FAQ.

The Anime Timeline of Haruhi Suzumiya

2005-Early 2006: Kadokawa gives the Haruhi series to Kyoto Animation to produce 14 episodes based on the first novel and some short stories from the Haruhi universe. Kyoto Animation chooses the seiyū and starts recording the audio for the series. This would be based on the 2006 copyright.

April 2nd, 2006: The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00 airs, creating confusion and intrigue as it was not the first episode chronologically. That would be the following episode. Fans were interested in what stories would come next and how each character was involved. The ending song Hare Hare Yukai becomes a global phenom overnight.

July 2nd, 2006: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya VI airs, closing the first airing of Haruhi with a bang and staring immediate speculation as to when the second season would start.

March 18th, 2007: The Extravaganza of Haruhi Suzumiya live event is held.

June 2007: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya scenario planning begins

July 7th, 2007: On the Haruhi website at about 20:45, a short 20 minute long security video loaded of two figures drawing symbols on the ground at a school; a reference to the story of Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody. No details on the second season were released, but a feature in Newtype stated “Haruhi Suzumiya Second Season decided.” A full page ad was taken out in the Asahi newspaper to advertise the second season on the same day.

December 18th, 2007: The Haruhi website vanished and a java script popped up asking users to enter the “5 keys.” When a user put in the correct answer (KSNAK), a still image was shown that features a scene of Yuki with text overlaid that stated that the second season was cancelled and that a new animation project was underway. This was given the 2007, 2008, 2009 copyright.

June 2008: A Newtype article on the new animation was released. Canned Dogs posted a translation of why the second season was canceled:
“The reason why they cancelled 2nd season and started Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu new animation instead was because they felt that they couldn’t just do a 2nd season and that they wanted to do a completely new Haruhi again. They’re still deciding on the concept for the new anime and how it’ll be like and having meetings for how the story will go”

July 7th, 2008: The official fansite uploads images of tanzaku (wishes to gods) at 15:00. At 21:00 images from the 2007 video are played with text from the Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody and Disappearance stories overlaid.

August 2008: Shounen Ace announces that the spinoff mangas The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan and Nyoron~Churuya-san were in production to be animated

December 18th, 2008: the Haruhi website vanished again and the net animation of The Melencholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan and Nyoron~Churuya-san were shown.

February 3rd, 2009: A re-airing of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was announced to start again in April.

February 13th, 2009: Instead of showing the Haruhi-chan and Churuya-san shorts on their Youtube Channel, Kadokawa posts the infamous Nice Boat video. They do post the videos the following day, including a version with English subtitles (though the quality of said subtitles were not the best).

April 2nd, 2009 (Exactly 3 years after the first episode aired): The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I aired in HD quality for the first time. Surprisingly, the previews for the next episode are missing. The next day, Gigazine reports that the Teletama television studio was informed by Kadokawa that the re-airing would be 28 episodes long. Of course this sparks speculation.

May 17th, 2009: As the 8th episode in the re-airing, the first new animated footage of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya since 2006 aired as the episode Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody started the 14 new episodes of 2009.

June 19th, 2009: For episode 12 in 2009, Endless Eight I aired with two things missing from the novel: the discovery of the loops and the ending. Endless Eight continued for 8 straight weeks (aggravating tons of fans) and then the five episodes of Sigh aired, giving the 14 new episodes 13 straight weeks.

August 2009: Staff begin scouting sites and designing characters for the Disappearance movie.

September 18th, 2009: For the first time since June, an older episode aired as The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00 was aired.

October 9th, 2009: Following the famous ED after Someday in the Rain, a commercial for Minori Chihara’s DVD aired, and then a teaser commercial followed for The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya movie coming Spring 2010. This was given the 2009 copyright.

Early December 2009: Dialogue for the Disappearance movie completes.

December 18th, 2009: The Haruhi website disappears again, this time revealing the trailer for The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya movie.
