It's a series of doujinshis (self-published works) written by Kawahara himself but under another name.

What Farodin said. Kawahara writes a "Material Edition", and sells them at a convention. The first 3 or so were from before the novel even started, and are in a drawn format. The rest are written side-stories.

The very start of Episode 5, where Kirito and Asuna are arguing about having the boss attack the NPC village, while the players attack from the sides, is a scene from Material Edition 1. But the anime cut out the conclusion of that argument.

True, but... Some people seem to love to hate Asuna, which to be is a bit weird given that we're talking about a fictional character. I do get pretty annoyed that Kawahara couldn't come up with some plots that give her something more to do. I suspect that as he continues to develop as an author his ability to manage different plot threads will improve, but it's a bit annoying for those of us who got hooked buy the idea of having competent male/female leads who don't sit in a "will they/won't they" mode.

I predicted Calibur would be 3 episodes and Mother's Rosario would be 6 episodes, and that there would be one more episode remaining. Too bad that one episode turned out to be a recap. Don't think all 3 episodes of Calibur will cover the part in vol 8 only since it's only 1/3 of the volume, so there should be a flashback covering the part from vol 4 that wasn't covered before.

Next Season is unconfirmed yet. Season 2 was only confirmed at New Years, for example. So not for another year or two.

Caliber's a fun side story whose only consequences extend to the game, with no real world trouble, IIRC. Mother's Rosario is an arc that focuses on Asuna as a character, rather than Kirito, similarly without the real world crisises that marked the Aincrad, Fairy Dance, and Phantom Bullet arcs, but unlike Caliber, is no less serious in tone. Couldn't hurt to give them a shot.

hhmm I'll try, well, like what I've said before, in MR he is apparently a side character. If the season ends with Kirito as the side character, it'll leave a bad after taste in my mouth(lol). I like Kirito but not that much, same for Asuna, but I prefer Kirito a liiitle bit. So ending the season with that kinda "turns me off". I am well aware that I don't make sense and perhaps being childish, but it is what I feel. But I'll try to watch it, who knows, I might like how they do it. and zekken is quite kawaii
