Working for romance
Recently a lot of the romance anime/mangas I've watched usually involves some wimpy guy who gets crowded by all the women in the world for no reason whatsoever. Or he encounters some random girl (main love interest) in the street at night and the next morning she's in his bed naked.
Basically the main character never has to do anything for romance and instead usually has to run away from mobs of horny women. I'm looking for anime or manga where the main character actually has to fear rejection, and has to actually work for his partners interest. A good example of what I'm looking for would be like Suzuka, or Maison Ikkoku, or even Love Hina did a good job. |

Hmm...
Maison Ikkoku is the best one I can think of for this. Maybe Cross Game would work? Possibly Mysterious Girlfriend X?

Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun - Check it out, I think it fits. It is a shoujo.
Overdrive - Kinda? The thing is this isn't really focused on romance, and there is barely any. But it does fit. This is a hard suggestion for me as I haven't seen many anime that are like this. I do know a lot of shoujo anime tend to fit this steady development of romance instead of instant obsession.

Here are a few shows you might try. They don't always hew to your specifications; in some instances, it is the female character who pursues the guy. But the romance in all these shows takes time to develop (yes, even in REC):
REC Nodame Cantabile Kuragehime Saiunkoku Monogatari Kamisama Hajimemashita
