Kamina's death scene was so fitting. So completely fitting in the way he went off with that smile on his face, the silence and abstractness of the scene, with only Simon's surprised questioning voice, conveying aptly the shock of it all.
To be honest, though, I feel that Kamina wasn't given a proper send-off; anime-wise. So much more could have been done with that scene in the rain, which was awesome in itself, but which was just too short. Sure he went out with an grand bang (GIGADRILLBREAKER was some crazy-shit), but more time should have been spent developing the grief of the other characters, and the atmosphere itself (like that scene of Lagann in the rain, with water, symbolic tears, running down its face). Basically, it felt rushed. IMO it should have been lingering, which I feel would be rather more apt, considering that Kamina is the... is the... well, it would be an understatement to say that he was a main character. For that reason, I'm sadly not entirely satisfied with the end of this episode. That said, well, it's really sad that Kamina seems to be gone for good. Thus far, all this way from episode 1, he was the driving force behind everything. He epitomises the show, for he is the show. I'm not too sure everything will be the same without him. It is as Simon says : We all lost something irreplaceable. Farewell, Kamina. |

^ Eh... that's not a fair comparison. This is Yoko we are talking about. It's within her nature to do such things. Yes, Simon would be likely to misconstrue those actions. But she didn't do it purposely for him to misinterpret them; she probably isn't at all aware of their effects on him.
Her heart remains for Kamina, and hopefully, always will. |

well, some girls are ok taking bath with a younger boy. No sexual related stuffs, just not a candidate for love interest. Yoko sees shimon in that light I guess. To me she is very similar to Misato in Eva. Big sis for shinji. |

If yoko's relationship would turn out similar as Misato's in agood way. That is having some tension as Misato never suceeded to be Shinji's other/sister because she had , among other things, physical attraction to him.
I would like to see some tensed moments happen between Yoko and Simon, and I surely as hell hope that Yoko wont be mourning over Kamina's death too long. Their relationship never seemed that deep to begin with. (given that kamina is not thedeepest person as well). I really dont want to see another clishe thrown inlike Yokko becoming a sister only figure and Nia a love interest. Throw some twists in the realtaionship for christs sake. We ahve some interesting characters in Gurren, but their realtionships are portrayed so simple and plain like for 5-7 year olds. I would like Gainax to do something more about it, even if its not character-strong anime to begin with. |

Haven't seen the episode yet since I don't follow the Nyoro subs (tried the first ep, but my laptop couldn't handle it for some reason, choppy and out of sync) so I've watched the AiA/IZ subs instead and caught up to episode 7 in the past few days.
Spoiled myself a bit by looking around in this thread... Didn't expect Kamina to die so soon, but then again it's not that surprising, there were some hints in the 7th episode that his recklessness would be the death of him sooner or later. Personally I didn't care for Kamina that much, although he was the driving force in a way, I also found him annoying and irrational, too full of himself and an attention whore. Still, I suppose I'll miss seeing him around. I did love it when he remodelled Gurren with his type of shades, that was hilarious. Yoko and Simon don't really match imo, but I can see how a guy like him would misinterpret some 'big sis' type kindness. And eventhough anime aging frequently is ridicilous, I just can't see her as 14 and fortunately it isn't official. I wouldn't rule out something in the future though, when he has grown up a little more. Anyway, can't wait to see the episode from all the comments, I might try out the Nyoro sub again but if it has the same problems for me I'll just have to wait for another sub to come out. |

Especially if you remember how the girls in his village treated him - "he's kind of gross"..."he smells too" - it's not that hard to see why he'd latch onto some friendly moments with Yoko. I'd be disappointed, though, if the two of them didn't at least develop a relationship similar to what Simon had with Kamina ("big sis" as some of you mentioned).

Farewell, My Friends
Hail to the Gurren-Lagann King.
I am absolutely casting my vote on this episode as the best of the overall season. Kamina made his exit with a bursting, blazing performance for his last. The animation and coloring to me were suitable for the event, as if the grayness of the sky already had foretold Kamina's sealed destiny. And, I am not forgetting that were other signs as well that hinted the last of Kamina. Spoiler:
The special effects and visual animation quality were beyond top-notch. They balanced well the environment to deliver a raging war full of the scent of death roaming by. I particularly loved Gurren-Lagann shots when it destroyed the Byakko with the Giga Drill Breaker, because the animation on those frames felt 80's quality and I am such a nostalgic and sentimental guys when it comes to 80's shows. Bye, Lord Kamina. What are Yoko and Simon going to fill the void if you departed with the glory of a King? |

Well, this is being broadcasted in a "simple relationship" timeslot. To me, this show is meant to be fun without a lot of brain cell usage. What about Kittan? Or character that hasn't been introduced yet?

I meant she doesn't have a choice about being in a relationship with someone other than Kamina...not that she doesn't have other choices besides Kamina (Kittan? lol...I'd actually prefer Simon over him).

Wow .... just ...wow. With how invincible they were up to this point with all the crazy deus ex machina junk, I never expected this to happen. Especially after he seemingly already comes back from the dead towards the end there for the final combine. Looks like he gets Yoko by default now >.>
And looking back at the Prologue bit to Ep1, it has to be an older Simon captaining the Dairangan or whatever in space there. Especially since he still has the drill-key thing. Very Kamina-esque hehe. But yes, I'm worried as well where they will go from here. Kamina WAS the show so far. I did not expect them to cut the guts out of the show at only Ep8... |
