Oh wow, can't believe I forgot to post this but Funimation has now announced that they will be putting out DVD/BR combo of the series sometime next year.

Where does the anime end , as far as the story goes , compared to the light novel?

There are two light novel series and the anime covers the entire first series.

Probably waiting for the second part of the light novel to finish?

Proof that I am insanely backed up in my series: this came out in 2010, and I literally finished it only a few minutes ago.

Anyways, despite the ending (but I was prepared for that, and will be reading the novels/going to the novel thread after this), I actually really, really enjoyed this series. It was essentially high fantasy with insane magic abilities- something right up my alley. In fact, I suspect I'm the only one who saw the first episode, with no prior knowledge of the series outside a brief trailer, and went "Holy Shit This Looks Awesome!" Waking up a being that is essentially Boss level in the first episode... yes, that spelled "epic" to me.

Granted, the politics were a bit heavy at times, but hey, you don't get this level of fantasy without politics being strongly woven in. And then getting to all the insane power in the second half... I have to give this series an 8/10 overall, and because a second season will never happen, I'm off the the other thread now.
