action/comedy with a hint of romance and a brilliant protagonist
It's pretty much explained in the title. I want to watch a show with an very smart and dependable protagonist like (a non anime example) Michael from Prison Break.
I would have said Lelouch or Light but I didn't want to give the impression I wanted a show with antiheroes or villain protagonists. |

It's not really "action", but CLANNAD has a great protagonist. I consider it a masterpiece too. And from the same writer, Angel Beats!
Baccano! (english dub preferred) and Durarara!! don't really have a "main" protagonist but focus more on interconnected groups of people and the events around the setting itself. Those are also very good. Black Lagoon (once again English dub preferred) has plenty of action and black humor. The protagonist starts off as normal person, gets kidnapped, has his kidnappers rub off on him by the end of episode 2, joins them, and quickly becomes a Badass Normal.

Second Clannad.
I also Reccomend Bosou Renkin. Kaichou Wa maid-sama also has a very dependable protagonist. Zero No tsukaima does Develop the male lead into a badass guy, as does Shakugan No shana by series 2. Thats about all I can think of, though Sumomomo momomo may be ok. Bleach fits the bill too. but the "hint" of romance is all you really get.

While less obvious in it's comedy (More witty than comedic) Heatguy J is great and it's one of the more underrated classics....Action packed with a clever main protagonist who is cooler than the other side of the pillow...Daisuke and his android compatriot kicka$$ while keepin it light...Daisuke is also no slouch with the ladies, although he turns down too much free booty for my taste^^...
