A 2% rating is about average for a late-night anime. Nodame and Death Note have the advantages of having popular live-action shows to help draw bigger audiences. Claymore, on the other hand, is just one more new show among many others currently airing. It's a little on the early side to draw any conclusions from its ratings.

Anime TV Ratings in the Kantou Region, Japan 2007.04.02~2007.04.08+

Animation Program Television Audience Ratings in the Kantou Region (Tokyo, Yokohama, Kawasaki, Saitama, Chiba, etc.), of Japan

---

The following figures come from reliable sources at 2ch who reportedly verify television audience ratings by telephone with Fuji TV (CX) and Nippon Television Network (NTV). (This reportedly cannot be done with NHK, TV Asahi, TBS, and TV Tokyo.)

Tuesday, April 10, 2007 [Wednesday, April 11, 2007]
*2.6% NTV 25:16 [1:16 AM] DEATH NOTE "Saisei"
*2.2% NTV 25:46 [1:46 AM] Claymore "Kuro no Sho"

Thursday, April 12, 2007 [Friday, April 13, 2007]
*3.5% CX 25:00 [1:00 AM] Noitamina "Nodame Cantabile" (Lesson 12)

---

Purportedly citing a reliable source who used to regularly post television audience ratings at 2ch, an anonymous source at 2ch posted the following figures.

Monday, April 2, 2007 - Sunday, April 8, 2007
19.6% Sazae-san [1st Place]
12.0% Chibi Maruko-chan [2nd Place]
*8.5% Gegege no Kitarou [3rd Place]
*8.2% One Piece [4th Place]
*7.8% Pocket Monsters [Pokemon] [5th Place]
*7.6% Yes! Pretty Cure 5 [6th Place]
*6.2% Major [7th Place]
*5.1% Keroro Gunsou [8th Place]
*4.4% BLUE DRAGON [10th Place]
*4.0% Shizuku-chan [? Place]

In its Top 10 Television Animation Programs for that particular week, Vol. 14, which will be archived here within a week or so, Video Research Ltd. later confirmed all the figures above, except for Shizuku-chan.

According to Video Research Ltd., Kodai Ouja Kyouryuu King D Kids Adventure finished in 9th place with a 4.8%. This means that Shizuku-chan received no better than a 4.3% and finished out of the Top 10. A 4.0% for it may very well be true.

---

The same anonymous source at 2ch may have posted the following, UNCONFIRMED figures.

Monday, April 2, 2007 - Sunday, April 8, 2007 Tokusatsu & Omake
*8.1% Kamen Rider Den'ou
*6.5% Juuken Sentai Gekiranger
*2.0% Bishoujo Celeb Panchanne

Glad to see Nodame Cantabile is still holding its own.

Totally OT: As a RedSox fan, I've been wondering how Wednesday night's (US-EDT) game against the Mariners fared in the ratings when it was shown in Japan. The first US major-league confrontation between Daisuke Matsuzaka and Ichiro Suzuki must have been quite a draw. ("Dice-K," as he has become known here, pitched well, but the Seattle pitcher, Felix Hernandez, threw a one-hit, complete-game shutout.)

If it was shown on regular TV, as opposed to satellite, and cracked the top ten, the ratings should show up here, in the Video Research ratings sports section, next Tuesday or Wednesday. Last week's sports ratings were dominated by Yomiuri Giants games.

Just goes to show you how fansubs != ratings in japan. The highest rated non 1000+ episode show, Gegege no kitarou, got 3 times the audience of almost any other anime, and it's not even been fansubbed .

Oh, and of course, Yes! Pretty Cure 5 isn't far behind in the ratings, and at least that's fansubbed (although with 1/10th the downloads of anything else this season).

Though of course, we all know nostalgia series for japanese will be far more popular in Japan and also that most of the top 10 are kids(6-12)/family shows. Therefore, they are not exactly equal things being compared.

I found it rather interesting that the last episodes of Ayakashi Ayashi on TBS scored around 3-4%, with the third to last episode scoring a 3.9% and the final episode scoring a 4.7%. Then, as soon as Terra e... started, the ratings started to go back down again for the MBS/TBS Sat. 6pm slot (3.1%, now 2.9%).

I wonder if that's just because the show was airing its last few episodes. If I remember correctly, Gundam SEED Destiny scored around 4-6% most of the time, yet the last episodes scored more around 8%.

I guess it has to be something like Gundam or FMA (or even Geass I suppose) otherwise the ratings won't come ._. That's rather sad. But I guess that's the reality of viewers...

And yeah, I suspect shows' ratings tend to go up a bit more when they're at the last episodes (if it starts getting more interesting, people who've been following the recorded versions/reading what happened might start watching it live perhaps?)

You wouldn't believe just how many countries have got Sesame Street.

You wanna @#$! with your childhood memories? Then find a clip of it on YouTube or something but make sure it's in one of those lovely languages that make Cookie Monster sound like he's hocking up a rat.

Not to nitpick, but that's 480,000 households, not viewers. Presumably the average number of viewers per households is greater than one, though given Japan's ageing population, household sizes are shrinking over time.

From the Japanese Statistics Bureau:

"The Population Census shows that Japan had 48.22 million households in 2005. Of that total, 58.9 percent were nuclear-family households, and 27.6 percent were one-person households.

"From the 1920s to the mid-1950s, the average number of household members remained about five. However, reflecting the progressive decline in the birth rate through the 1960s, the size of household was down significantly in 1970, to 3.41 members. The size of household members continued to decline to 2.60 in 2005, principally due to the increase of one-person households and the conversion of households into nuclear families."

So a 1% household rating might translate into something like a million viewers.

Well, in the US with Nielsen, 1% corresponds to 1.1 million households because they assume that there are only 110 million TVs in the US. So the question is what is 1% counting?
