Well, at higher altitude, they are.

Chemical reaction limit bullet speed to about 1800 mps or less, or about Mach 7, and this was the absolute limit. (APSFSD, or hypersonic dart shot from tank's gun, are 1650 mps IIRC)

OTOH I.S. has the speed of plot speed of altitude*, at higher altitude, they can swat ICBM like flies, at lower altitude... well, good luck avoiding missile massacre.

*not canon, but consistent with the depictions

Quite the inverse, Rin stated that I.S. velocity at high speed combat added extra OOMPH to projectile weapon (V3 Novel).

BTW pistol and SMG are slower than rifle due to shell design. Though the rapidity makes up for that... why not use full MG?

What I mean is not actual scale, but the bullet design. Notice the recently popular PDW design? They're just that, SMG firing small rifle bullets the size of pistol ammo. Smaller bullets + same material = higher velocity. Roughly same or lighter recoil than contemporary SMG. Smaller wounds, but punch through most body armor with ease.

Granted, large caliber and heavy mass have it's own merits (such as larger wounds). But we're talking about velocity aspect here.

EDIT: I can imagine I.S.-scale PDW is actually improved version of man-portable Light Machinegun.

the reason such bullet designs aren't made for all SMG's is due to their specialization.

Rifle like rounds of PDW's definitely have a higher penetrating power in exchange for wound size, however they lack stopping power. Most SMG's can boast a decent stopping power from what I remember but guns like the P90 and the MP7 don't.

BTW, latest handwave for I.S. all-metal weapon (bullets included) = special coating of rare metal, the same thing used by I.S. core.

This is why, energy wise, they're just 1.5-2 times more powerful than than conventional weapon of similar size, yet still effective against other I.S., this sort of coating can only be produced by I.S. core, the reason of why even the next generation anti I.S. weapon didn't use them. They can't.

P.S. which mean if some stupid cowgirls try to use I.S. SMG to chew through tank armor, the tank crews will be pissed, soundly.

That's what normal anti-barrier weapon works, mostly those that is loaded in large autocannon (30mm and up) is encapsulated with anti-beam coat, which is diamagnetic, then again, anything smaller might as well not exist.

If you go for even larger caliber, such as Otobreda 76mm or Shoulder Launched weapon, good old shell still usable (Incendiary, HESH, HEAT), just much less effective than magic bullet with unobtanium coating.

As rule of thumb, 20mm Vulcan and standard fragmentation missile is worthless. Which mean 50-cal with Incendiary round will only piss the nearby I.S. pilot. You can actually drain her shield, just will take a lot of time and ammo to do that.

To summarize everything about Fighting IS: It is simply not cost effective... no idiot would be willing to throw that much money away just to prove a point...which already had been proven: Kill Pilot = Kill IS, end of story.
