We've seen Kotetsu dodge bullets, outrun a flame thrower and other amazing feats without his powers activated - all for plot convenience more than anything (bad guys are terrible shots, anyways). But tossing the tree was pretty GAR. Heck, we have seen him "fail to save his daughter" in the second or third episode at the skating rink, when she was saved by Barnaby.

I was happy to see Kotetsu wear different clothes this episode. He had a different outfit in the flashback as well, though it was pretty much his usual get up but in reverse colours... Another good detail was that his hair actually looked wet and was flattened by the rain, something you don't always see in anime...

Nice episode although the all too convenient storm was kind of silly. "Oriental Town" was also kind of odd. Since Sternbild essentially seems to be the USA, I got the impression that Oriental Town was on the west coast, while Sternbild City is basically New York City. Certainly explains why Kotetsu doesn't get home often, but he commented that he hadn't been home in years. I can understand being away for long periods of time due to being on the opposite coast, but years? And what is Kotetsu's "cover story" for why he is away all this time, i.e. what does he tell Kaede his job is? The older brother knows he's a NEXT, not sure about his mother.

The mother knows he is a NEXT, that much is clear from the earlier episodes, but Kaede certainly doesn't know.

When Kaede was in Sternbild she was staying over at his place for an Ice Skating tournament, I assume. At least his old family home in the city.

His mother and brother know about his powers. No mention was made of what happened to his father. His brother does seem very old, though. At least 40. His mom is extremely old, too. She probably had him as an older woman.

A good point Master Chibi, it would certainly align with the parallel between Kotetsu and Legend.

Good point, it's more like heritage.

I don't think that is true, how many Next have had children? How many of those parents have lost their powers while the children gained them? If it were as simple as that then the case of losing ones power would not be so uncommon. It was said that losing powers was a rare case, if it were because of a child gaining them then it would be explained but they don't know the reason for it other than it being rare.
Besides Legend had lost his for a while before Yuri gained his.
In case of kids gaining powers, genetic heritage is the obvious reason. But losing ones powers is completely separate.

About the Japanese styled home: I think Kotetsu's family is Japanese, and moved to America or something, so they have a traditional home away from the city. I mean Kotetsu T. Kaburagi is definitely not an American name. xD ... Though he doesn't look Japanese. ._.;

anyone else thinking that Kotetsu powers are just in a stablizing flux and that once it reachs its new time zone he'll always be the orange glow instead.

something like 30 seconds of 100000x power or something, admittedly this feels like the x-men 2nd mutation factor, then again next has the whole meta human factor so it's not really surprising.

In the interview between ANN and Sunrise I believe the director said that they wanted foreign characters and mentioned having a Chinese character, Russian, Japanese, and Hispanic so I think guessing that Kotetsu's family might be recent immigrants is a smart guess.

Well...

Kotetsu: Japanese

Barnaby: American?

Karina: American? Perhaps with European descendence?

Keith: Definitely American

Antonio: Hispanic

Pao Lin: Chinese

Ivan: Russian

Nathan: American (African American?)

Kotetsu: Japanese or some sort of mix... looks the most ambiguously racial out of all of them.

Barnaby: American or Canadian or Australian or Irish or British.

Karina: American? Some sort of white person.

Keith: Definitely American. ... Bandit Keith. lol.

Antonio: Hispanic, obviously given his last name. Caucasian Hispanic, I assume. Bull theme.

Pao Lin: Chinese. Confirmed

Ivan: Russian. Likely

Nathan: American (African American?)... or western raised black person.

This is the future, a lot of them are probably mixed despite their names. It's not like it matters, this is anime. No one ever looks their race, anyway.

Kotetsu has a deep tan and the brown hair and brown eyes. He's extremely ambiguous. By his name, hometown, and overall family practices... at least part Japanese.

I just assumed, since we've established pretty well that this is set in the US (the characters even drive on the right side of the road) that all the white characters were American (except Ivan where it's already been stated he's Russian) and that Nathan was African-American. He's been around long enough to become CEO of the biggest energy company in the city (and it got that way by buying up other companies) and that takes time, if he really was an immigrant then he must've come over years ago to still have had time to do all of that.

EDIT: Heck, Kotetsu and Antonio have been in/around the city since at least high school (going by the audio drama) and if you're born in the US you're a citizen, that means Pao Lin is the only character whose confirmed to be a foreigner (and probably Ivan, although he's been in the area at least a few years as well). Just watch them make Sky High British or something and throw us all off. XD

What if a freak accident or Lunatic got Kaede killed and Kotetsu not only gets his powers back, but an amazing power up?

This is Sunrise though, gotta expect someone to die....
