more update on nuclear plant

Quote:
Unit 1 (shut down at 2:48PM on March 11th)
- Reactor is shut down and reactor water level is stable.
- Offsite power is available.
- Control rods are fully inserted (reactor is in subcritical status)
- Status of main steam isolation valve: closed
- At 6:08PM, we announced the increase in reactor containment vessel pressure,
assumed to be due to leakage of reactor coolant. However, we do not believe
there is leakage of reactor coolant in the containment vessel at this moment.

Absolutely terrible! I was watching the horrendous images just before work and was completely shocked, especially with the sea front washing everything in it's path. In the late morning the number of bodies found was reported to be 200-300 people.

I really hope things are settling. Prays and thoughts to everyone over there.

nagano quake actually on a different fault, so this isn't an aftershock. It's a chain reaction caused by the initial quake, but is a totally separate quake.

This is sickening.

What's the status on the potential radiation leaks from the Fukushima plant and others?

This nuke plant story is being seriously overhyped by the "I failed science" media... yes, its serious. yes, they have safety systems and extensive protocols.

But yes, much of the reporting I've come across... you might as well be listening to your "idiot friend who was raised on National Enquirer and soap operas that dropped out of high school"

Sorry, but in my career (NASA stuff, science museum, etc) I've encountered very few reporters who had a bloody clue about technology or science.

Meanwhile... the maps of the quakes in and near Japan are starting to look like one of the "boss moments" in Missile Command.

Just saw an energyflow map of the tsunami in the Pacific Rim... its pretty clear *why* the authorities in Hawaii and the US West Coast acted as authoritatively as they have. Unfortunately, it was a quick image on the broadcast news or I'd link to it.

I sat on a wall near the bay for a few hours and ate a few sandwiches while looking at the water. The inlet probably strangled a lot of the energy coming in.

Well if the nuke story really is overhyped, that'll be good. That would be the worst possible part of this whole mess in the long run.
