A complete remake is never called for, coz the TV series up to Shishio saga is already a classic: great story, great animation (for its time), great voice acts (mostly), great soundtrack, great characterization. To be able to surpass all that would be a divine job.

Oh yeah, I'm one of those guys who feel that Kenshin's voice isn't masculine enough for a samurai warrior. I actually prefer the English dub or, in my case, the Indonesian dub when it's aired in my country coz they're actually better in portraying Kenshin. I know it's not the fault of the original VA. Her voice just didn't match the character's more masculine moments.

When I see people accusing Mayo Suzukaze's performance of being overly effeminate I can't help but wonder whether they actually watched the whole thing with the original audio track, or just a few minutes of clips on youtube and decided to make a rash judgement (likely fuelled by nostalgia bias and not being used to female actresses playing male characters in general) with that alone.

Because it is obvious to anyone who did watch the whole thing that whenever the situation called for a deeper and more intense vocal tone and delivery, Suzukaze always provided exactly that. Just listen to this speech (06:39):

Absolutely phenomenal performance right there. If that's not a perfect fit for Kenshin, I don't know what is. He is a gentle yet strong willed swordsman based on the historically effeminate looking samurai Kawakami Gensai. And Suzukaze nails that persona to a T. Which is no surprise, since she is an extremely talented stage actress (which is why you'll only find her in like two other animated shows), who has a tendency to be typecast in live action roles as, guess what, effeminate samurai.

True. I guess Kenshin being so good was a double edged sword for Watsuki. He struck gold with his first work still in his twenties, but then following it up obviously turned out to be an immeasurable challenge.

To tell you the truth, my first experience hearing the original track is when I watch the movie. During that, I was a bit surprise by Kenshin's voice, though I can still accept it knowing that there are real Japanese guys with that kind of voice. Then, I watched the entire series again with the original track as soon as I have access to it. It still feel strange to me. I know it's a matter of personal taste. Still, I'm not making rash judgment after watching Youtube's clips.

I know Suzukaze appearing on this and Snow Queen. What the name of the third show for her.

Le Chevalier D'Eon, where she plays the Queen of England.

I actually watched that show just to hear more of her work, but as it turns out it was a fairly minor role. It was interesting to hear her voice a full fledged female though, and the voice was naturally quite distinguishable from her Kenshin voice.

Sigh - another old SJ series gets its remake announcement and we RK fans still have to endure our torture of indeterminate length. I just want to KNOW already!

I think a continuation is much more likely for this, since the original series is being re-aired right now, which doesn't make sense if they were planning a remake.

At the end of the day, it doesn't have to make sense.

I can. Richard Hayworth. XD

It's what ultimately makes watching the same character in the Japanese audio off-putting to me.

Not saying that it should be someone with a deep or gutteral voice. A good tenor like Hiro Shimono or Tomokazu Seki should be perfect.

Ditto. Most especially, Saito and Hiko became even better roles under Kirk Thornton's and Richard Epcar's performances. Kenshin can certainly drop his "that I do/am" utterances though.

I on the other hand would welcome Deen's production. The tragedy of season 3 had been that not only did the story begin to suck by going off-canon, but it started to look consistently better while at it and this better bishounen look was thanks to Studio Deen.

I myself wouldn't have called it effeminate, only uncommon for male qualities of timbre, pitch, and formant. I happen to possess such a voice, and have been called "mam" over the phone even after having given my conspicuously masculine first name just seconds before, and this more times than I can remember. I can understand our attachment to Suzukaze. I just don't think that we would be missing her "phenomenal" performance had a man voiced the character in the first place.

That it's phenomenal because she did it and that's what we saw. And I would question in what sense was it phenomenal, since I found it unnatural and thereby off-putting. I just have a different idea of what Kenshin would've/should've sounded like.

It's been suggested that it will be 8/20, but I haven't seen any independent confirmation of that.

Google Translate says "unveiling of latest new products", which could be something about blu-rays or the live-action, or almost anything. Is that a bad translation?

Yes, it's a bad translation. 新作 definitely refers specifically to the new anime work that they have previously announced as existing, but have not detailed yet. 初披露 basically specifies that it is the first unveiling of information regarding the new work.

I honestly cannot believe g-translate messed up something that simple. It's sad really, you think with their money now they'd have already built an AI program to sort out nuances of that basic sort.
