Backing up iTunes files to an external hard drive

I have backed up iTunes files to disc before. However, I don't know how to back it up to an external hard drive. Would I import my files to one? I'm not sure what to do. Any help is appreciated.

Copy & paste your entire iTunes library onto an external hard drive, since iTunes does not offer the function to back up to an external hard drive. Ensure that you know where your iTunes library is located, and all files have been consolidated into that folder.

Please advise if you want to keep the backup and the your normal library in sync, or you would rather prefer to have your iTunes library synced with another computer.

I'm going to reformat my hard drive, so it will go on the same computer. Thanks for the info, I'll check out the apple link.
