Mahjong is known in the Western World, but it is only played by retired women here. At the local Jewish Community Center they have mahjong tournaments, but the youngest player is probably in her 60s.

No one from SnS or HnG will win, because both Nagi and Shana have lost their momentum. However, Nagi was quite close to victory in 2007. The same cannot be said about the last year's final match where large majority, I suppose, expected Azunyan to defeat Nagi and take the first place. That's why I don't think that Nodoka or Kodomo could win when the second season comes. But they will surely do well again.

I play it too and I'm 19. Though I only play online mahjong, because I don't know about any other 3 people in my city who could play Riichi mahjong XD

Actually, mahjong is known, but most people who will remember something will think of that senseless game for one player when someone asks them.

I think that characters like Run and Tooru have strong potential in Japan. For example Run is a bit like Hirasawa Yui, who will never be popular outside Japan as much as in Japan. We'll see soon how Run and Tooru will fare.

I love Saki until I remember that I can stop reading Saki in 6 months then catch up in 20 minutes. Season 2 will be in 2017 at the earliest.

I think it will come earlier than in 2017. Now it's Nodoka's match in the last 16, so there's only Saki's round left, then a few chapters with fanservice before the final match starts, and the final match. And that will be the end I think. Late 2013, 2014, maybe?

If everything works out, then it may end as early, I think. But there are still a few questions... Saki plays fifth and doesn't Teru play first? I predict there to be some sort of drama, side story, or whatnot that will take some chapters before the final match... Or, well...Saki could not win at all and we drag out the manga for another (school) year. :P

Funny. This talk about mahjong had me look up to see whether or not some kind of mahjong activity happened over at ACEN. Well, they did. Too bad I missed out on it. But at least, I got to track the Facebook group.

And having learned Riichi mahjong, I can see how Americans may be turned off by the game. Y'need to play many many times to actually understand what's going on. Then throw in the scoring system, but which I cannot calculate on my own just because computers do all that for me.

All that shows is Saki fans are good artists... The reason that Saki isn't a serious contender is that I have a gut feeling their fans are not the most loyal. Unlike RM fans who would rather vote for Souseiseki, when it got down to Nodoka in the QF, who the hell would vote for that? It certainly doesn't help that both Saki characters in the QF has boobs.

I've got to disagree. Saki fans were very loyal and organized. The problem was the inability to pull in people from outside the core base, which is only in the 600-700 range. Most of the neutral voters whose characters had already been eliminated went against Saki in the semis, and Nodoka was benefiting from anti-Shana votes in the quarterfinal.

Also, Koromo is a flat chested loli, so only Nodoka was weighed down by those big obstacles.

1) I still don't know the scoring system. That's why we have computers, right? RIGHT?

2) I find it amazing that with the level of complexity, you are expected to play fast. There's no thinking between plays because you have to watch discards, which basically means you have 3 seconds when your tiles are dealt to know what you're going for. So while I understand what's going on, that doesn't mean I can incorporate it into my playing...

Well, to be fair, Japanese mahjong do have one of the more complicated scoring system. Hack, I've play HK Mahjong for god knows how many years and it still takes me awhile to adjust...

And for an American, they also have to get use to the tiles, since they're in Chinese/Kanji...(Unless it's those that have numbers and N, E, S, W on top corner...)

Well, all I would say about Saki is that their fanbase is really organized...they surprised me quite a bit in 2010 when I expect them to just die off after a year (2009) of trolling. But no, still 2 QF-ist...of course, by that time, they garner WAY more than enough hate vote to get rid of them once and for all...

Trouble with Saimoe now is that is seems to be dying the slow death. Mostly due to the mass IP blocks I think. It cannot expand, and thus potentially suffers as a result. Also there is the other potential loss of voters in the large amount of dead following the Earthquake. No telling how many voters lived in those areas hit hard by the Tsumani. Someone posted not that long ago some Saimoe stats that had top voted matches, and all where 2007 aside from two, one of which being the highest match ever...in 2006. After 2007 the number drop off heavily.

IP blocks is the main thing why voting goes way down anyway. And earthquake? I doubt there's a huge effect, especially when the hardest hit region is mostly populated by older (I'm talking about seniors) people.

As for SnS's Shana, HnG's Nagi, or any other Kugimiya character, it seems doubtful that they will triumph (at least in the short-term) due to the whole "repeat" winner business. Pretty sure in Saimoe history that no repeating VA has won multiple times, meaning Kirino may very well be out of luck as well this year with Azusa winning last year. With Tenshi/Kanada losing last year earlier than expected, I could very well imagine Kuroneko winning this year in place of that.

easily the Black Horse. With Hidamari Sketch at the end of their rope this year (yeah they're coming back still :3) and GA out from last year, it wouldn't a surprise if Milky Holmes made it to round 3 if not further.

Now, that I got to the 10th episode to Madoka... it's easy to see Homura equivalent to Nagato. Of course, don't bother her. She's reading. Also... and to think, Nagato had it pretty bad when it came to causality loops. Homura's nightmare is even a couple steps above that. Moe-ness votes is one thing. But pure badassery (sp?) will give extra points.
