Well people say Ouran High School Host Club is funny

My Bride is a Mermaid is mainly comedy as well with romance

I really dont look for comedy. Sorry. I like more of a serious atmosphere

I'm with Elegance. I tend to lean toward either the more serious anime or the light relaxing ones that are low on laughs. Regardless, here are some recent comedies I've enjoyed:

Shinryaku! Ika Musume
A squid takes the form of a human girl and washes up on land to invade the humans who polluted her seas. This is more cute than funny but it has lots of laugh-out-loud moments.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes
A group of young superhero detectives fights a group of villainous thieves who also have superpowers. However, a cryptic incident causes our heroines to lose their powers. They subsequently lose their great reputation and are forced into probation by their detective academy, at the same time losing their teamwork and revealing their ugly sides. Much more funny than it sounds. If you see it please watch up to at least the third episode before deciding whether to continue.

Level E
This is a series of short stories about several races of aliens secretly hiding among Earth's citizens. Most of the stories center around a mischievous alien prince from the planet Dogra. He finds his royal duties and grand destiny boring and seeks to have fun shenanigans on Earth instead. Highly recommend.

Baccano are good comedy/action series.

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
is totally hilariouse, can be watched on its own.

Great Teacher Onizuka another great comedy series. Does have some seriouse themes but still hilariouse.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
are good comedy/romance series with bunch of comedy.

Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? funny + some action

Love Hina another funny/romance/harem series though manga is better.

Sengoku Basara are quiet funny with lots of action.

Soul Eater has a lot of comedy.

K-ON! are good comedy series as long as you don't mind slice of life and some moe.

Working!! are also great, pure comedy series.

I third the FMP: Fumoffu suggestion. Sousuke and Kaname are hilarious in that series and the love comedy of the love triangle really shines through.

Second K-ON!. I love the way Ritsu and Mio interact, and how you find out that Sawako(the teacher) has a hidden past.

I find Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya to have some really funny scenes and Kyon is great in his narration. The movie, Disappearance is a lot more serious but is also a great movie too.

Lucky Star is Japan's answer to Seinfeld, so if you like that kind of humor, it's a great show.

Also Excel Saga and Azumanga Daioh are hysterical older shows.

I strongly second/fourth Azumanga Daioh, Fumoffu, School Rumble and Lucky Star

and I add Minami-ke, Dai Maho touge and Muteki Kanban Musume

If you don't mind the old stuff: Ranma 1/2 and Uruseiyatsura are great comedy classics, but the manga are a lot better than the animated versions imo.

Much of the above are great series indeed. You could also try Cromartie High School, Mitsudomoe, Seitokai no Ichizon, Hayate no Gotoku and Pani Poni Dash.

I've never really "gotten" Urusei Yatsura. Tried the manga and anime a couple times... mediocre stories with dubious plot continuity and ANNOYING main characters. Ranma 1/2, on the other hand, is awesome.

TC, if you want hilarious, go no further than Hare+Guu.

I had the same opinion for the anime but then I changed my mind when I read the manga, it somehow felt a lot fresher and a lot less annoying, but apparently didn't work with you.

and oh, how could I forget Hale nochi Guu! Crazy anime that literally made me cry for how hard I laughed at some scenes.

Unfortunately not all the episodes are good and some are outright boring.

Not sure this anime is "HILARIOUS" and as I have stated in a previous tread i suck at finding funny anime... maybe i'm emotionally damaged........

Shakugan No Shana (I, II, III)

Zero no Tsukaima

Kaichou wa Maid-Sama (I loved this anime!)

I have another suggestion Angel Beats. To me its absolutely hilarious. Cuz well its in the afterlife and you cant die so they do some really hilarious stuff. But in the end its very emotional. Throat starting hurting.

3 titles come to mind immediately, most of the already suggested before:

Full metal Panic? Fumoffu
Seto no Hanayome
Baka to Test
School Rumble

Guess Nichijou qualifies but it is currently still running.

Surprised no one has mentioned this one:

Azumanga Diaoh - It is a slice of life/comedy anime about 5 girls going through school. DO NOT LET THIS FOOL YOU! This is by far the funniest anime I have watched and have yet to find anything that tops it.

I know it isn't what your looking for, but trust me it is worth it.
