I have the distinctive feeling that we're teetering on the edge of another Great Videogame Market Crash. Except unlike last time, there's a solid and powerful PC game market to pick up the slack when the consoles inevitably fall. Considering the direction technology has taken, if the console market crashes again, they will likely never recover and dedicated game consoles will go the way of the dinosaur.

Already mobile phone games are slaughtering traditional portable consoles. With widespread adoption of HTML5 and streaming services like OnLive, I can definitely see a world that no longer needs a dedicated game console.

I understood the "idea" of gaming console (basically the user is outsourcing the maintenance to the manufacturer) but lack of a meaningful hardware upgrade path and other varieties of "fail to follow through" always left me a bit cold on consoles. Basically, our Xbox might as well be a "Rock Band appliance" (well sometimes we play FIFA soccer on it). Our Wii is used for bowling and for Swing Golf. My son sold most of the other games we've tried over the years... and 90% of our machine gaming is on PC. The new Google Market for games is having a sale this weekend for Droids.... "World of Goo" for the phone, etc.

The idea of a game console made a lot of sense in the 80s and even the 90s. It stopped making as much sense in the late 90s and early 2000s. It makes almost no sense now.

Portable consoles have always struck me as far more sensible than their livingroom-bound counterparts, but with device convergence at an all-time high I expect to see those merge with smartphones soon enough. It's already happening. iOS is a major gaming platform and the Xperia Play is literally a smartphone crossed with a PSP.

That is what I am worried about too, so I am holding back on buying a PS3 despite owning both the Chou Jigen games.

The problem with consoles is that they aren't upgradable, so unless someone develops a game console with a flexible hardware architecture, the console market will rewind into a crash. Of course, they are so scared about "hacking" to do something like that......don't they ever ask the nerds why they would buy games like Nendroid Generation despite its iso being widely available on the net for the PSP?

Heck I still haven't opened my Key 10th Anniversary boxset from 4 years ago. There is too much emotional value to use anything inside.

Hmm, funny that I haven't posted here yet, despite me being a Suda 51 fan and all.....


Anyways, I'm definitely looking forward to this, despite it having cliches up the wazoo (cheerleaders, zombies, fanservice, etc....). Frankly, I always felt that chainsaws were badass weapons, and this game certainly does not disappoint in that regard! As for lack of a PC release or Japanese voices.... eh, I'll live. Just gimme that over-the-top wacky action that's to be expected from a Suda 51 work.



Also, I most definitely want to fight that zombie boss with the keytar.
