Is it just me or was this a very quiet episode?
By quiet I mean almost no BGM being played in the real life scenes until near the end.

Totoum, I'll have to check the episode again, but yeah, it was a bit subdued, probably to set a feeling of normalcy in the Human world before dropping the mind screw

Then again, it's probable she's only a bit sick from walking in the rain, but the way her eyes lit up like that. Also, that looks like Yomi's place, doesn't it?
I'm thinking more of sick, as in a cold. The black circles on the eyes, the heavy blush, the raindrops that look a bit like sweat.

Back to Saya, she has a ton of little bird related paraphernalia in her office. I get the feeling the fast one they'll pull is that she is indeed the author of the book and she's aware Mato and Yomi are her biggest fans, or something along those lines.

Think of it this way:
Mato has short pigtails, BRS has long pigtails.
Saya(?) has short hair that's just down... BGS has long hair that's just down.

In other news, I find it hilarious that Saya has a bunch of different coffee cups for each girl that's appropriate for them (basketball, small bird, star, etc).

There's something that's not easy for me to comprehend on episode 3.
Why did Black Rock Shooter start attacking the defenceless looking people?!

Since the alternate world is symbolic, my guess would be that Mato's carefree nature is trampling over other people's feelings. More specifically, she didn't realize that she was hogging the ball in the basketball game and that people were getting upset about it. So those defenseless people were her team-mates and/or opponents that she walked all over in the game.

I really wish that the alternate world is true and reality is symbolic

Give what was seen in this episode, this can't be farther from the truth, IMO.

one theory is that Saw and Saya are making some girls "grow" a warrior Other like Rock, Dead, Chariot, etc. But this is only possible after the girls go through some trauma, which is why Saya tried to mind rape Kohata after the love letter fiasco. Remember she was the only Other who interacted with Saw.

Now, there's a chance that this is bad and Rock just "killed" them before they could become a fighting Other.

However, there's also the possibility that Saya was making them grow to force the girls to face their pain. Kohata tried to laugh it off and keep her pain locked inside, but that isn't healthy. By forcing her to create an Other then she can kill the Other that contains that idea and make Kohata change, like in Kagari's case.

But then again, this all could be wrong.

Episode 3 surprised me by bringing back a lot of that slower-paced slice of life charm of the OVA, but I don't like how this show seems to rely on totally batshit insane characters to create conflict.

That's my only criticism of Episode 3 though. Most of the cast came across really well here, and I enjoyed most scenes. But yeah, it would be nice to have an antagonist/conflict creator that didn't seem like she's a reject from Arkham Asylum.

8/10 for Episode 3.

But then what's with the Councilor who seems to be aware of the events there?

what Xizro means is that the Other world is not symbolic. It's an actual world that can affect the Human world.

It's likely she is aware of what's going on there for the same reasons than Mato

I prefer to believe the theory about BGS/saya being actually good while BRS/mato are just going a bit too far with "helping" in this episode.

otherwise, I will never get my BRSXBGS moments
oh and we wont see IBRS.

From the point of view that the alternate world is symbolic - that's a good interpretation.
Starting at the OVA up to the second episode of the TV series I'm among those who believed that the alternate world is symbolic.

But the councilor reacted when one of the "people" got beheaded..

Mato has dreams of the alternate world too..

Starting to think that the alternate world isn't symbolic after all. Instead the alternate is a place linked to the real world in a mysterious way.

Symbolic doesn't necessarily mean fake, it just means that the events in Mato's world are also represented in the alternate world. It's the basic premise of the anime, right? Whether it's a parallel universe or just dreams doesn't make any difference to the meanings behind the events.
