Silent Hill VS Resident Evil. Which one is the scariest?

I would simply say Silent Hill because it plays more on subtle fears and not in-your-face scares like Resident Evil.

I've never played silent hill before, but i did play resident evil 1 and 3.

I find that resident evil is more about suspense than horror, it wasnt really scary.

yeah, pretty much the same,
resident evil had the 'jump' factor as in WTF whoah,
whereas silent hill really freaks you out and really makes you look behind your back and in the corners, and many times i have paused and thought this is realy freaky wtf is going on and then check the room, rarely played it on my own >im a big scaredy cat =D

Silent Hill for sure.

Then again, Since both series present their stories from very different angles, I think it's actually a little bit unfair to put one VS the other in this regard.

Now, if you include Fatal Frame in the mix, the poll could become far more interesting.

I wil say Silent HIll also, but I can deny there are some Resident Evil parts that are really freaky, and I just didn't want to play it alone at night

I have played a bunch of resident evils and I never really got scared. Sometimes a zombie would pop out from nowhere or nemesis and I would jump and be like,"woah" but I wouldn't be screaming or anything.

As for Silent Hill...

It was freaky. It was so morbid and messed up. The babies in the wheel chairs + the static radio sound effects in the background..-shivers- I found that unpleasant. Not to mention some fo the creatures were down right freaky. rememver in SH4 the room...that three headed baby looking thing?! O_o

The difference is subtle, but these games are in different enough genres to make a comparison between the two useless. Biohazard/Resident Evil, almost by definition, will never be as scary as Silent Hill, simply because the focus is very different. The shift towards more action-based gameplay in RE is apparent, especially if you look at the most recent incarnation.

Silent Hill by far. As stated before Resident Evil is more the 'wtf' factor, just a more morbid version of Zelda in my twisted little mind. Neither of them managed to haunt me in my nightmares...except maybe Wind Waker's graphics.

In terms of scare factor:

Kuon > Fatal Frame > Silent Hill > Resident Evil > Eternal Darkness

I lol'd at the "Neither of them managed to haunt me in my nightmares...except maybe Wind Waker's graphics." because I just hated the graphics :/

RE doesn't even try to be scary anymore, see RE4. The beta of RE4 was actually really freaky and had a scary atmosphere like Silent Hill. It even had dolls coming to life and tried to stab at your ankles...

Haven't played Kuon, but adding another game my list would look like this:

Fatal Frame > Silent Hill > Siren > Resident Evil > Eternal Darkness

To this day, I have yet to finish Silent Hill (1). Let alone finish 1/4th of it. I was and still am scared of it.

Resident Evil is more of suspense than horror. I admit, the first time I saw it I had was afraid of sleeping alone, then I turned thirteen. RE is more sci-fi while Silent Hill is mystical, somewhat.

I completely forgot about Siren! That is indeed a great horror game. The ability to view through your enemies eyes is hauntingly freaky!

I really recommend horror fans to pick up Kuon. It a definite gem.
