There is always a Hot Springs episode and a Someone Has a Fever, Oh No! episode.

I hate them both. The flu is not that dramatic.

The episode in every long-running anime with the main characters doubles/evil twins/imposters.

You should watch Galaxy Angel's spoof of that in season 1.

In a sense, "Galaxy Angel" makes tons of spoofs of common anime cliches.

If there is a school in the anime, there's bound to be a Cultural Festival episode.

I think that would be the fearsome recap-episode...almost every show has at least one of those and they are a pain in the behind most of the time.

how about the classic hot springs/bath scene where Female screams over something trivial (monkey, too hot water, stick that looks like snake, etc), thus motivating Male to run in to save her, only to get slammed in the head by Female for seeing what he shouldn't have

There are usually episodes on major holidays. Either North American or Japanese. Such as Christmas, Valentines, New Years, Birthdays...etc...I think this is more prevalent on animes that are more lighthearted (eg. Comedies, and Romance). Because I doubt there would be a Valentines episode on a dark and moody anime about fighting (not that it isn't possible, maybe the fighter has a girlfriend?).

Hospital episodes are quite common as well. Usually an illness that's exaggerated and henceforth the character is at the hospital (eg. like TronDD said, a fever or flu).

Let's see here...... We have:

1. One of the main lead female agnsts episode.
2. Annoying clip show.
3. 75% flashback episode.
4. Shrinking episode.
5. Weird dream episode.
6. New student transfer's into main leads school.
7. Guy hired to to "date" main female lead until the chance for mugging/killing/attempt at depressing her episode.
8. A detective-ish episode.

I could almsost fill a page with a 12 font on with on how many obligs that are in anime series.

Cherry blossom (festival) episode.

Hot springs episode.

Beach episode.

Love letter episode.

(Childhood) flashback episode.

Musical episode.

Christmas episode (sometimes with fan service).

Transfer student episode.
