So I just finished reading Maison Ikkoku...and I'm just speechless.

Okay so I finished reading it about an hour ago...the anime really pissed me off. But the manga...it was just amazing...I don't know what else to say. It's probally the first manga that's ever made me cry (I'm a guy) everything was so well done...I just couldn't say anything at the end. It was just so awsome...

I finished reading love hina before this...and in all honesty Although all the characters of love hina were memorable...the story and the emotional drama that Maison Ikkoku puts you through makes it probally my fav manga series (shared with Love Hina...)

It was just so amazing...why didn't anyone tell me it was this good?

ah, Maison Ikkoku. The manga that got me into manga.

Still my all time favorite manga. I'm reading it again thanks to Viz's 2nd edition releases (this version includes all of the chapters they cut out of the 1st edition!)

hmmm...when did viz release the 2nd edition releases? Do you know which ones are missing?

From what I've been told they're missing like 5-6 chapters

the 2nd edition is the ones that are in the smaller tokyopop format. The 1st edition were the big original ones that were released in the mid-late 90s.

Why? Well that's easy.

Rumiko Takahashi is a genius. Plain and simple.

I don't like most of Rumiko Takahashi's stuff... highly over rated in my opinion. Still, Maison Ikkoku is one of her mangas that I can actually get into, so I can say that I agree with you that it's good. But if you found that to be emotionally draining or something, if you ever read any hardcore seinen romance mangas you'd probably die from the emotional trauma.

*tries to think of something other than SaiKano because he always recommends SaiKano...*
Damnit...

SaiKano. My group translated the first 3 volumes of it, but it was licensed by Viz about 8 or so months back. But we still have a one-shot on the site that is done in the same style as the main story (but has nothing to do with the actual main story).

*tries to think of Seinen that get translated in the states...*

*continues trying...*
*fails*

Meh, SaiKano's one of my all time favorites, so you'll just have to find someone else to recommend another one. I'm extremely biased

Godai is definitely not manly. but thats what make Maison Ikkoku such an interesting love and romance manga. (since most japanese anime and manga's main character are like chic magnet :P ) In any case, its my favorite manga in the drama & romance genre!

Vol 4 of the second edition just came out recently. I'm guessing its going to be 10 volumes total. The 1st edition was 14 volumes.

Maison Ikkoku is my favorite series ever too. Every character (even the minor ones) is 100% real, which makes it quite touching.

Many manga artists were influenced heavily by this book - most notably, Akamatsu Ken. A lot of otakus in Japan (hence, Akamatsu Ken) who are old enough to remember this being serialized memorialize "Maison Ikkoku" as a bible.

Perhaps in a way, it was somewhat of an antithesis to "Urusei Yatsura." Perhaps, it was also interesting to see Takahashi Rumiko do something with a real-life setting. And perhaps it was all Otonashi Kyoko and Godai Yuusaku.

Talking

Wow, I think I need to pick this series up the way everyone is talking about it! How long is it (and how much...)? I'm going to go with my instinct on this one and go buy the entire series after I graduate.

No, please don't. At least try a volume first. Maison Ikkoku isn't HORRIBLE in a way that something like, say, Love Hina is horrible, but I really didn't like it very much. I didn't want to rain on anyone's parade so I've been keeping quiet, but you might regret it if you just run out and buy it all just based on what the people on a forum say.

I love the Love Hina manga sooo much that I have the bi-lingual and domestic versions. I've never been that obsessed to make a purchase like that before. I read Love Hina whenever my spirits get down about school or girls, and it makes me feel

So if people who love Love Hina love Maison Ikkoku, I don't think there's much else for me to think about

Well, Love Hina's main problem imho is that Akamatsu made the story like 3-4 volumes too long. I enjoyed the story and the characters in the first few volumes, but it went wrong in the end (it seemed as if the author was trying to increase the profits from of the manga in the last volumes, instead of trying to do a good story)

About MI: In my opinion it's Takahashi's best manga (with Urusei Yatsura ). The characters were usually quite loveable (even Coach Mitaka :P), although Godai was sometimes too much of a wimp for his own good... I was getting urges to smack him a good one whenever he allowed the other tenants to blackmail him

Maison Ikkoku is definitely the best romance/comedy manga I've ever read. Love Hina is great, too, but I always saw it as more of a gag/comedy manga, with romantic elements. There would be some romantic moments, and suddenly Keitaro is launched 100 ft in the air by a giant robot turtle. Maison Ikkoku seemed to take the romance a little more seriously, and for me the ending of the manga was much more satisfying than that of Love Hina. There were times when I wished Godai would stick up for himself a little more, though, because he did let the tenants walk all over him alot.
