I like this episode. Love the fight. Rider rocks. Gimme Berserker already!

Wow, I'm surprised that somebody's still touching this topic.

I do remember from some TM source that the ‘heroes’ that can be summoned by the ‘Holy Grail’ are those who died horribly in regrets and still have some unfinished business (correct me if I’m wrong). Just like Iskandar who died in young age, Arthur whose kingdom was ruined in the end, etc. From those names you mention, I don’t think Saladin is included to that category coz he died in peace IIRC. Also, the heroes you can summon is not limited only from the past but also from the future. So, you can summon like...say...John Rambo, John Connor, or Darth Maul. Hell, I want to see Robin Hood as Archer and Darth Vader as Saber, but we know that they died happy.

Edit: sorry, without noticing it, I wrote a spoiler. I've deleted it now ^_^.

As for Lancer... I think Diarmuid rings a bell.

yup... Irish knight who died from a hunt because his stupid douchebag master was acting careless.

in all records, I still cant recall him holding two lances in gear checking.

to add: in the Fate universe, why are all Irish Knights armed with Lances?

I think the only exception in myth level that had matched Gae Bulg is Odin's Gugnir.

Previous episodes have shown that Fate/Zero could properly handle lengthy expositions and introduce the characters, the backgrounds were gorgeous and the BGM was awesome, but I have a certain reservation that prevented me from truly enjoying the show...until now!

Yes, yes, yesssssss! The battle animation did not disappoint! I've never seen a melee fight so detailed in anime. All factors considered, this is my favorite anime of the season, no doubt about it - everything else I've seen this season pales in comparison!

...one extremely minor question, though. Why didn't Assassin use Presence Concealment? Did sharing his eyes with Kirei prevented so?

He did, but apparently magic doesn't work on technology

just like how a steal bomber doesn't "conceal" itself if it's like right in front of you

Yeah, poor him T-T. No wonder he becomes wandering heroic spirit.

You don't have to think too far about TM's takes on the heroes though. Their descriptions often too far off. In all records, Arthur is a guy, Iskandar is not that big, Gilgamesh is not like that and so on.

Hmm, I have been thinking about this, and my conclusion is that Assassin may have not used Presence Concealment as extensively as he should be seeing as (i) Kirei and Tokiomi are not supposed to know that Kiritsugu is there and (ii) the rest are supposed to believe the Assassin was dead. Saber, Irisviel, Lancer, and Kayneth (and possibly Rider too) certainly did not notice him as far as I can tell, hence my guess that Assassin haven't been using the full extent of her ability owing to the confidence that the rest of them should think she's already dead.

Kiritsugu's stratagem, if I understand it, is to use Irisviel as a decoy Master so that he could snipe the other Master without being noticed. He succeeded, since Kirei reported Irisviel as Saber's Master to Tokiomi (also another possible reason why he did not want to take down Kayneth there and risk exposing himself to the other Masters). By and large, he's working almost like an Assassin himself.

Well, we already know who Berserker's seiyuu is and Ryotaro Okiayu doesn't sound like that from what I can tell, not to mention the madness thing prevented F/SN Berserker from saying anything but "GGGRRRAAAAAAH!" so I would assume the same applies to this one, but I guess we'll see.

This wasn't the kind of fight that a Kara no Kyoukai-esque epic battle music would really suit. It was much too carefully planned out and deliberate for that, hence the complete lack of music at times. But I fully expect Kajiura to pull out some awesome tunes with her trademark choir chants once faster and more serious battles start taking place.

i think this eps is the best thing i have seen in this season (last season for me was the eps 1 fight in Blood-C)

they seem to fight with honor, which is not exactly what happenning as Emiya and Maiya is trying to snipe the rest, Lancer's master is shouting annoying orders, and Assassin is spying for the Kirei and Tohsaka team

and i fear that Rider's desire to fight all servants/heroes might caused his team dearly...

anyway, i hope the subsequent fights will be as good as this one

Needs more dancing assassins.

I think Kiritsugu needs to hide better too. It looks like Assassin could just turn and see him.

I think Assassin already learned his lesson He's not good at being sneaky. He's more of a dancer.

To be fair, compared to other conquerors of his time and before, he is much more lenient than them. But still a brute according to today's standard.

He generally let people he conquered to continue to practice their culture/religion. In fact he integrated many of aspect of their culture into his own empire. And not mention he decided to dress himself as a persian and practice some of their custom (which the Macedonians doesn't like, along with his attempt to integrate persian soldiers into his army).
If he was a brutal conqueror compared to the people of his time, his spread of Hellenistic culture wouldn't be so successful, and the Persians wouldn't have given the degree of respect or recognition they shown in their literature.

Try C3 from this season for starters.

Fate|zero isn't meeting my expectations. The first episode did - even if it was nothing but stills and even if they removed the emotional scenes between Kiritsugu and Irisviel that are oh-so-vital to understand Kiritsugu's conflict and motives. But the rest has just been a drudge so far. Not bad but not as epic as I wanted it to be / thought it'd be.

I stopped taking this seriously right there.

In any case, you're free to dislike Fate/Zero, but it's adapting the story pretty damn well I'd have to say. Maybe you just prefer reading over watching things?

I'm starting to wonder what are your "expectations".
I can understand how this episode can feel "slow" due to the fact we only get to where Rider shows up in the party, and few far away stills.
But with all due respect, comparing with C3 is really something out of the blue. For one, the battles are completely different: C3 was focused on the very raw and savage portion of a certain character, whereas in Zero, both Lancer and Saber are shown as proud warriors.
Not only it was a battle settled by tactics, trying to figuring out the enemy's move/range of ability, but it was something else than a mere battle: a -duel-. Frankly speaking, you wouldn't expect a frenzy battle with these two fellows complementing each other as if they wanted each other's photograph.

Therefore, expecting a brawling battle, at this stage, with these 2 servants is really not appropriate. Also, C3, while being consistent, use a lot of tricks to make the animation "fast paced", whereas Zero's battle was way more focused on the details (environmental damage, sparks, impacts, manoeuvres)... not really the same as rashly swinging a Waas as if it was a golf club.

C3 scene wasn't bad at all, but mentioning it as a better melee combat than this one is difficult to comprehend, especially it was the thorough exposition of Lancer and Saber approach.

C3 is not out of the blue, the action animation was better, but F/Z was focusing more on tactics and characters, not the action itself, which was complementing the other elements.

C3's action actually felt extremely choppy to me. It wasn't horribly animated by any means, but it lacked any good environmental effects, interesting camera angles, any real tactics at play, nice BGM, or really well done visual effects.

Plus as Klash said, the nature of the fights are completely different to begin with. If the fight in Fate/Zero was anything like that in C3, that would've made me very sad.
