While watching the anime, I notice that the Katana that Nobuna has is a bit oversize for her.

This was something I had been eagerly anticipating since I found out about it several months ago, and so far I haven't been disappointed. The visuals are quite impressive, the character designs are top-notch, and there's a pretty decent blend of story elements going on.

As a side note: For shame, everyone who passed up having Nobuna in her awesome hat as an avatar. For shame... Oh well, guess it works out for me.

That's actually somewhat common, you know. Any reason you're pointing it out?

I just wonder why is it common. Oversize swords where realistically they can't pick it up or can't use it very well. Is it something to make characters look cool or is it something else?

"Makes the character look cool" is generally the motivation behind that particular design choice, with "makes the character look stronger" being another. Of course, the latter is generally only found in male characters.

... And then you have people like Samurai Warriors' Ranmaru, who just have really big swords for no adequately explored reason.

Does it really make a character look strong with that, there are other ways. I don't think Nobuna needs an oversize Katana to look strong. Her dreams and her seriousness already made her a unique female protagonist.

I wasn't referring to Nobuna with that second part. That goes more to characters like Bleach's Ichigo, who wield what are basically oversized butcher knives.

Generally I find females with firearms are more attractive than those with swords. Nobuna knows how to use it herself and train her soldiers to do it as well. Ah, I got go final exams is up.

Katana: That's because it's a katana, not a wakizashi or a kodachi.

The thing is there are many variations of the Katana. Kodachi and Wakizashi both look like a short length Katana so it is weird. There are subtle differences of how they look like.

Here is some history of Katanas http://theswords.info/japanese_swords.html

Those are not variations of the katana, those are varations of the nihondo (Japanese sword). The katana is a class of nihondos which are either slightly below or at 2 shaku (around 70 cm), and a person of Nobuna's status would be using a katana regardless of her actual height.

I wonder if she can use it effectively, I mean she is a 16 or 17 years old girl I suspect. Well we did see her already point and almost killed 2 people so far in 3 episodes. I much rather think that the Match Lock is more of an effective weapon for her since she is in the back of an army commanding, but you are right about status. Nobuna would use the Katana regardless anyway even if she didn't know how, but she does. Very dangerous, it brings a whole new meaning of the saying "Don't make a girl mad, especially if there are sharp objects nearby she can use".

I suppose I shouldn't mention my own nihondo collection.

Hmm, what do you happen to have a girlfriend and wife who knows about the collection. Best to put it somewhere where they can't reach it easily. Also, why do I feel we are alone in this thread?

A chibi loli ninja to lighten up this thread!

Or do you prefer someone who is more tsuntsun?

Perhaps you wish to go for assets.

Spoiler for Large assets, as in you shouldn't be watching her in a public place:

I prefer the tsuntsun, and Ninja isn't a Chibi she is a Loli. Edit: I take that back, I will take the large assets. No I think I will take all three.

About swords, technically a wakizashi is a kodachi (= short sword), while katana, tachi, nodachi, etc. are odachi (= long swords). Usually that is, different schools use different terms.
