Golden Kamuy

Spoiler:

Summary from Baka-Updates:

Quote:
In Hokkaido, the far northern lands of Japan, Sugimoto survived the Russo-Japanese war of the Meiji era. Nicknamed "Invincible Sugimoto" during the war, he now seeks the riches promised by the gold rush in hopes of saving the widowed wife of his now deceased comrade from the war. During his hunt of gold, he finds hints of a hidden stash of gold by corrupt criminals. Partnering with an Ainu girl that saves his life from the harsh climates of the north, they venture into a survival adventure to race against the criminals that seek the hidden stash.

So I've been hearing a lot of good things about this manga, and the first chapter was just recently translated (by the same group doing Dungeon Meshi, no less!). I definitely like what I'm seeing so far... the story has a pretty unique setting (aftermath of the Russo-Japanese war), great art, a protagonist team consisting of a badass war veteran and Ainu hunter girl.... and hey, the story is a good ol'-fashioned treasure hunt! I'm definitely gonna keep my eyes peeled on THIS one!

Seriously though, this series really needs some more love, because it's great. Sugimoto and Asirpa get more awesome by the chapter! As far as the more recently translated chapters go, I actually kinda hope that escape artist guy comes back as an ally.... partially because it would be nice if not all of the tattooed criminals were enemies (that, and he seemed to be a pretty cool guy). I also kinda found it amusing that Asirpa seemed more concerned about eating a rabbit than her partner's life, lol.

Ah yeah, this really is a pretty great gem I found. And don't worry, Mr. Escape Artist does come back and as an ally.

Anyway, quite a thrill, the last few chapters were. We had elite soldiers facing off against vicious beasts even at the loss of their face or internal organs, Sugimoto befriending a bear cub, and Asirpa taking our immortal friend on a visit to her village! But interestingly, no sign of tattooed criminals so far. I expect that to change soon enough, though....

Awww Yeah, the scanlation progress is blazing lately~

What an injustice, Granpa's Butthole forced the hinna to eat eyes and brains but won't eat miso...

Started reading this recently and found it kinda interesting especially with the setting. Some of the more recent chapters are shorter but still captures the thrill of an adventure.

Well, the manga is serialised in Weekly Young Jump after all, so of course every chapter after the first one is your standard 19 pages just like Kingdom (which is published in the same magazine).

Geez, figures the one guy in the 7th division with his head in the right place wouldn't last long.... guess that's the fate of a (sane) soldier without scars.

Also, kinda surprised that Asirpa wasn't forcing Sugimoto to eat the fish's guts or whatever. Well, there's always the next furry critter they catch, I suppose!

I love how nearly every time some woodland critter is featured on the splash page, it's usually being eaten in the chapter itself, lol. That being said:

Also pretty curious as to what Grandma was saying to Sugimoto there near the end....

Just how is he meant to eat that? it still has the skull in the middle, it's almost all bones.
Scrape it of and give the man a fork, or a knife, chopsticks...
put it through a blendtech and give it to him in a glass

Well, someone on Batoto did a rough translation with a Ainu dictionary and apparently it's about a village meeting tomorrow to marry Sugimoto to Aspira, lol.

But don't worry, they're just friends and the whole point of this gold hunt is for Sugimoto to support and marry his friend's widow.

Man, I really wish there was more discussion when it comes to this manga. Not a lot of manga which takes place during the Meiji, Taisho and Showa periods. Well, chapter 16 is out!

Oh, and Golden Kamui has also been nominated for the 9th Manga Taisho Awards! Congrats, Noda-sensei!

a manga very interesting, it's always nice to see a manga about a time when Japan was an imperialist power (in fact, in recent years the japanese nationalism is increasing), perhaps the number of mangas like this increase in the future?

The manga really hooked me because it takes place in Hokkaido, an underdeveloped region at mangas.

now I have a doubt about the sword used by the imperial army at that time (Gunto kyu), it was a sword that mixed Japanese and European characteristics or was just a katana with a wraparound hand guard?

Sniffing a wolf's ass.... okay....

Anyway, Sugimoto's in a pickle, now! Those nutty 7th division guys have him under their custody..... can the Asirpa/Retar duo save him in time!?

That's interesting.... though I agree that Sugimoto and Asirpa wouldn't have those kinds of feelings towards each other, heh.

Two translated chapters today! Whoopee!

And damn, Sugimoto was freaking badass here, too..... I mean, what else can you call a guy who can beat up two soldiers despite being hogtied? And like Ladiusman said earlier, the escape artist guy did indeed return as an ally.... and as Retar's chew toy, heh.n

Anyways, I'm pretty sure that Sugimoto's faking it there at the end of ch. 18. I mean, like I just said above, he literally beat those twins with his hands tied behind his back earlier, so I highly doubt that just one of them can disembowel a Sugimoto that's free of his restraints, lol.

Another awesome couple of chapters! So despite everything, Sugimoto needs Asirpa's help, after all.... well, all's well that ends well, I guess. And once again, that first lieutenant shows just how creepy he is (that "shirt".... ugh). Also, for once, it's now Asirpa's turn to try traditional Japanese cuisine! (I do feel a little sorry for that horse, though.....) Anyway, what's our little Ainu lady's opinion?

Boy, new enemies just keep popping up one after the other.... the tattooed criminals are one thing, but with the addition of brain-damaged soldiers, Shinsengumi remnants, and now an expert bear hunter.... Sugimoto and Asirpa sure ain't got it easy, no sir!

Well, well, turns out there was more to that bear hunter guy, after all....

Also, Asirpa sure is one ornery drunk! Love all the goofy faces she makes though.

Ho hum..... it really is a gosh-darned shame that this series isn't getting nearly the amount of love it deserves.... it's truly great.

That being said, Nihei Tetsuzou is a truly awesome antagonist. A badass bear (now wolf) hunter with a boner obsession.... I'd actually be pretty sad to see him go. Haven't read ahead in the raws, so I can only hope that he'll be spared like the escape artist was.... if only for some more of his awesome dialogue ("One with the trees, one with the trees..... urgh! Boner!").

Yep, it really is a damn that barely anyone (well, outside Japan that is) knows about this.

A anime could bring this attention outside I think, but would anyone want to make an anime set in a period just after the Russo-Japanese war?
