SciFi Anime

Like "traditional" SciFi-ish anime. Not Gundam, Eva, TTGL, Guilty Crown style SciFi, but more like Eve no Jikan style SciFi.

I took "traditional" sci-fi to mean no mecha or goofiness, but yeah... a little vague.

I'll make the obvious suggestion if timetravel-sciFi is good of Steins;gate.

I'd put Noein and Dennou Coil at the top of the list. The first is based on the "many-worlds" interpretation of quantum mechanics; the latter imagines a virtual world visible only with special glasses that is super-imposed onto the physical world.

The video gaming aspects of the movie Summer Wars might also have some appeal.

Shirow Masamune of GitS fame made two science fiction animes with Production I.G in 2007 and 2008. Real Drive fits your request more closely, though I thought Ghost Hound was the better story. That one has a strong mystical component, though, as well as material from psychiatry and neuroscience.

If you were to broaden your request a bit, I can recommend three comedies with science-fiction plots. Two of them, Level E and Oh! Edo Rocket, concern aliens; the third, Moyashimon, is about a college freshman who can see microbes.

For "traditional" I meant SciFi where the main focus is SciFi, not another genre in a SciFi setting.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Noein would be perfect if you want something complicated and a little thought provoking. The action scenes are a little rare in this but well worth the waits to see them.
