It might be a change of tone somehow (starts as lighthearted before going full-on drama in the later episodes), though as hyl said, it might be a spoilerific "hit and run" element that's yet to be explained.

I wonder whether character popularity have any influence on which girl the anime will go with?

I doubt it, because i have seen some adaptations in which the most popular heroine was not choosen.

edit:
Also if we go by one of the last held characters polls, then Michiru should win. But realistically speaking i can't see her as Yuuki's love interest. Seeing that she didn't get any romantic development in the anime.

Is this Anime going to treat that as another "here's a traumatic/serious moment used for dramatic effect and then we'll gloss over it later and it'll have no serious or real consequences because this is a comedy" plot device or is it going to do a change of tone and seriously deal with it (like is someone going to go to jail for that?)

I'm kind of sick and tired of comedic animes making light of serious matters (and warping young minds about consequence and cause & effect) along the way!
Anyway... I'm innocent of the game so... I suspect that the issues of the past will be a serious matter in the end, especially between Yuuki and Chisato...

It's romance comedy actually... but it gets serious with these two are left alone with a chocolate bar... those moments takes my breath away...

Anyway... the Millions Dollar Question is

What is Yuuki's preference?
Although I'm overthinking it, Isara is the only one Yuuki has had specific recollecting of the event just happened, specifically:

After he sees bullying incident, he gets to smell her. The next scene he is very clearly enjoying it despite being in the club room for a meeting about collecting funds for the election.

After he cut his finger and got it sucked to stop bleeding, the first thing he did after commenting about the open air bath was to look at his finger and recollect that scene before he got cut off by Chisato.

No other character has done an event where Yuuki would recollect it the next scene. Now I don't know if it happens in the game or whatnot, but in terms of just the anime, to me it looks like the recollection is like "oh something bad happened (bullying/finger cut) but something nice came out of it (smell, healing/mending)".

Of course this is all moot since Isara is easily seen as a positive kouhai character that gives positive support to Yuuki. So it's very easy to not do anything at all. And as clearly noted, there's no Isara event support. As a joke, Isara's the only one Yuuki even mentioned the word "fate" to, despite joking. (Remember, in ep 2 Yuuki specifically said he desires his destined one.) And so the cooking trait conversation in ep 7 gives at least another signal. (Everyone acknowledges Yuuki cooks well, but in terms of the club it looks like he's "used" for cooking but gets picked on a lot. Whereas Isara told him a positive merit and how that's desirable. Chisato doesn't do this at all.)

So yeah while evidence of Isara being a Yuuki preference is absurdly weak, the anime did go as far as using a slight part of the next scene to show his recalling of the event that just happened a scene ago. You don't usually see Yuuki giggly happy, and he even knows to keep up a stable front if he gets carried away.

There's two main things that stop me from thinking it's Satsuki: the word "forced" and the fact that while Satsuki has had the most events with Yuuki, it's also pretty much the only way for her to actually communicate with him (since she has no club association).

So basically if it's a generic encounter: "hello" and "good luck on election" and "some key thing to learn about trying things"
And if it's not election related: It was mostly about Hazuki.

In other words the focus was on election/motive or something, not about "Satsuki and Yuuki being alone together".

Similar things can be said on Chisato. If the topic Yuuki and Chisato talk about are election related, it's normal communication. If it's about just them two, then there's hesitation occurring.

However even all this is moot since there hasn't been a character that specifically sees eye to eye with Yuuki. EDIT: (ex: Chisato knows Yuuki is the one of the pervert incident and inquires what did he do last night but he responded shogi, thinking she analyzed as far as thinking it was Satsuki. There was no meeting of the minds. In contrast of Satsuki, she just "interrogates" Yuuki straight to the point. He doesn't want to bring it up, but it was appropriate and necessary then. The anime consistently showed that the Chisato and Yuuki don't have the perfect link, despite being together all their lives, but of course there's reasons but still.)

Also with Yuuki's conversation with Mifuyu who tells him to notice Chisato more, he specifically said "that again?" as if it's a recurring theme. Anyhow, the anime's been consistent with showing evidence of "Don't link me with Chisato just because" and "I want to do something for me".
I just feel like a good majority of events Yuuki has undergone has literally "carried" him whether it's the election and other things. While he undergoes this he sees what is really important to him (rather than lounging around daily). So events that occur that are independent of these events are all completely Yuuki dependent (but most if not all are chance encounters anyways).

Then there's an entirely different thing: technically the preliminaries went really smoothly for the most part (this is acknowledged at the start of ep 7). Naturally we'd expect that not only is the real election much more difficult, but probably something won't go so smoothly.

I mean if radical change were to be applied, for a food research club the only radical things they can do is food related or having a manifesto in complete contrast with the other two (it can't really be similar if the objective is to sway them).

Seems like there's a LOT of things to do from episode 9 - 13. I do like how the anime hasn't made things obvious. Even if some things are obvious, a lot hasn't been addressed, and quite a good number of things can still happen in the final 5 episodes.

Of course whatever the result, it shouldn't be too surprising. Unfortunately it might boil down to "an event that creates value" as the pick, as him picking a girlfriend without some key event would seem kind of random.

Hehehehe.. I liked how you analyzed that... hmmm... well still... I'm for Chisato and I think the events in the OP where Chisato and Yuuki are fighting will be the climax/ turning point of the anime.... That's what I think....

All the girls are wonderful I wouldn't mind an undecided or harem ending if they're willing to share him .

Well, I agree that that scene in the OP could be the turning point, but on the other hand Oojima expression looks more like being frosty than next-to-deicing. But the OP is all for Chisato, so it'd be consistent to at least hiding something to leave the uncertainly Since I still think that Chisato will be Oojima's choice.
But looking at him in the opening sure I can agree more with Triple_R on Oojima's firmness being something relevant, real, more than a barrier.
Anyways if they want to take the drama route they needs Chisato, for the her bad or for her good. And if they want a drama fight Isara would be the best contending. Unless something bad won't happen soon to Satsuki, she is lacking on that front.

If Chisato ends up with MC at the end, does it make this series the first anime series where the MC rejects the girl, but ends up with her in the end?

It's all depends on why he rejected her (twice). Until Chisato arc, it hard to make any clear statement

Great Chisato pic, white overknees, pantsu and twintails!
Now if only she wore those white overknees all the time...

That would certainly be interesting
We still have five episodes left where Yuuki can realise how much he really likes Chisato.

Even if Yuki rejects Chisato, I'm hoping he'll change his mind in favor of ending with her due to how much he realized he likes her...
And yep, I don't think the whole "MC rejecting the girl, but suddenly ends up with her in the end because of his mind's change" stuff is common.

I don't know, it's not like he's confused about how he feels about her, that scenario would only work if there was any leeway in his rejection. Well, if the writer manages to do it in a way that makes his change of heart believable then it's okay.

The only one that came up to my mind, IIRC, is
Spoiler for spoiler:

Or at least it comes very near.

However, yeah, I don't really recall an outright rejection like this and the MC ending up with the girl. Well, hopefully we will get a better picture once the next episode airs; however, it looks like it is back to election focus. I'm guessing it will be Michiru focus, as she has been slowly creeping up in the background the last few episodes.

Anime Ops usually have a lot of stuff in them you will never see in the entire series.
Some even have stuff in them that actually belongs to the next season.
