My first impression of the episode? "Koizumi, is that you?" Damn, those closed eyes makes that senpai a spitting image of him.

Overall, kinda unimpressive episode. I particularly liked the story book part, which was well done, but the rest was like "okay lets just get on with it already" feeling for me. Except for whenever Ibara interacts with Oreki, which as a shipper I can't help feel giddy about (even though Chitanda does the same thing, can't be a shipper unless you can hold double standards about other ships lol)

Seriously speaking though, maybe it's because I feel miffed that the location of the back issues was revealed rather anti-climactically, with all the build up from the previous episode and all. Sure there's the new mystery as to where's #1, but I dunno, I don't want to set myself up for disappointment for the chance that Aneki is going to reveal where the location for that one is as well.

Series still feels pretty slow. I remain uncertain about it.

Spoiler for Episode 3:

Some of the metaphorical imagery is pretty nice. I liked the picture book and the scene where Houtarou was looking at chibi Eru digging in the dirt.

Episode 3 felt noticeably tenser than the first two due to the 3-hit-combo of how desperate Chitanda was putting her request to Oreki, the confrontation with the sempai in the classroom, and lastly back to the 'main story' when the 'plot thickens' at the end.

EDIT:

I thought the guy was smoking some dope, it turned out to be just tobacco? Is that how it was in the novel? I'm warming up to this series a little, but Eru's breathless excitement at everything is annoying.

I feel like this while trying to decipher what will happen next.

In any case, the plot will definately thicken now.

Spoiler for Ep3:

Just my 2 cents.

It's really slowly chugging along. I liked the 2nd episode and I liked this even more. The simple mysteries are starting to get a little deeper while we start uncovering Chitanda's past and the "main mystery" with her uncle. The whole narrativistic nature of this series is now slowly working in it's favor.

Something tells me that this show will work much better in chunks than waiting week after week. This is considering the fact how slow and delicate the pacing is so far.

Oh hey Koizumi, thought you were too cool for smoking. xD

But man, the animation and episodes just keeps getting more captivating, looooooving it. Something's tied into Chitanda's sudden 'allergies, cold, what?', but even more mysterious is that missing first volume. Anyone else think Daisuke Ono was NEEDED in that scene?

I had the same thought, but that's how it is in the book:

(If anyone hasn't seen, BT just finished the first volume.)

Yea.... While certainly better than the first two episodes, this really is a boring show. There's not enough dynamic character interactions to qualify it as a character show, the mysteries are relatively weak, and the pacing of the show is on the slow side. I'll guess I'll keep watching it as I have nothing else better to do on Sundays/Mondays though.

O what! Is translated? I've been reading it in Japanese. Why did I do that to myself.

You're being a tease. That doesn't explain anything about the major questions raised in this episode.

About this show being boring or not: I suppose it's all a matter of preference. I love stories that deal with mundane occurrences. I also love the use of overt symbolism. Each episode has had a great deal of both, working in counterpoint with each other. The overflowing letters, the ensnaring hair, the flowers, the quivering restaurant menus, the pendulum clock turning into a heart and then turning back. Others might find these touches heavy-handed, but I'm enjoying it all.

I tried to have some reservations from the first two episodes (but considering that I watched both at least twice each, I'm kind of failed), but the third one certainly sealed the deal. For a "slow" show, it's impressive that I was rooted on my chair the entire 24 minutes.

Recalling the answer for an interview (thanks, ultimatemegax!), I'm looking forward to how her uncle story will fit into "bittersweetness of growing up" concept. I'm sure it'll tie up with how "it's already a history" as well, since then that mean they themselves are "history in the making."

I have been wondering what the name is the music for the café scene. I remember it now that I've heard it in Rockman DASH (Megaman Legends) as well. Anyone know the name on top of your head?

Must. Resist. Reading. The Novel.

I just noticed something from watching the 3rd episode.

They all refer to events 45 years ago, but in the novel the events are all referred to as being 33 years ago.

Hyouka was published first in November 2001, which was 11 years ago. How do they get 45 and not 44? :O

this by far is the best episode, it made me care for the purple eyed girl and telegraphed the hints better, wich is crucial in any mistery(at least any good one) that you can go back and think that you had enough to realize the thing yourself, and im glad that only in the first episode i felt the bgm missplaced in some scenes, and most importantly it left me wanting to know what is eru searching for.

The only part I didn't really get is why the name "Chitanda" mattered alot to that guy. Otherwise the case was pretty good.
