This episode definitely solidified where they are going with the sister. Those who read the LN, without giving spoilers, how faithful has it been so far?

Man, I knew it was going to be Miyabi! This episode didn't confirm it, but it was pretty clear. I don't think it was a red herring - even in Episode 3, when Miyabi cried over Shougo saying he can't "marry his sister", she didn't deny it. And it was never explained why she acted that way. She also never seemed to mope when Konoe or the other girls try to seduce Shougo - she's only moping now because Yuzurina is taking her identity.

I love Yuzurina. I have a thing for evil scheming little girls. Yuzurina also clearly wants Shougo to get it on with Miyabi so that the brother/sister incest will cause a scandal that will overthrow the Mikadono Group.

Some thoughts:

Kono Naka had a very interesting premise, where the Harem was actually plausible. You had a character who was a wealthy heir, and you had a background plot that could have been every bit as intriguing as the other Harem Anime in Kono Naka's territory, Koi Chocolate. The only problem is, the company succession plot seems strapped on. Yes, Ikusu is an awesome character, and one of the closest links to the plot. And I am also aware it is an ongoing LN, so to be fair, the real plot seems to be only really beginning with the End of the Sister of the Week series of episodes.

The biggest weakness is characterization. Consistently, the adapters, if not the original LN writer cannot resist the impulse of typecasting your protagonist as an Ordinary Everyguy Harem Protagonist. This seems rather unimaginative to me, and it is a shame, because for someone in Shougo's position, he just seems too generically nice. Worst, there is a distinct naievity to his characterization. Yes, one could argue that it is acceptable for the genre it is in. Still, I wish the author did more with his character, and actually made him sound more like a rich heir. Then again, it might be difficult to do so. Alas, but not unexpectedly, the reliable old standby of the Male Harem Nice Guy archetype kicked in.

Certainly, it seems that at the beginning, most of the Haremttes seemed like typical Harem female archetypes. Indeed, I tried viewing all of them in the cynical lens of a Gold-digger. After seeing that, Shougo's harem makes more sense than 90% of the other Harems - the only reason he's the protagonist, is because he is rich.

Of course, several episodes on, I'd say Konoe has been steadily building depth over the period - we can discard the Gold-digger hypothesis. Same as Rinka. It is a shame really, that Rinka has been dismissed, and cast to one side. Arguably, Konoe and Rinka have a more equal relationship with Shougo. And it's quite ironic - Konoe is the most subtle about her actions - she plays Shougo the best. On the otherhand, Rinka's attraction to Shougo is probably easy to comprehend to. Shougo is the "safe" choice for a suitable marriage for someone of her status. If she's going to be married off anyway, go for a decent rich bloke.

I think at this stage, it's safe to throw Miyabi out of the consideration. There's alot of signs pointing to the fact that she is the sister- Mei actions for one was a huge hint.

I will further speculate that Shougo may well have two illegitimate siblings. It is still possible that Yurizina is another illegitimate half sister, who is also his second cousin by blood. Miyabi is the second. For all we know, Shougo's father went down the
Spoiler for School Days Reference:

Ultimately, Kono Naka suffers from an acute problem faced by many LN adaptations in recent years. The anime often stops just before the real plot kicks in, especially in the One Cour Adaptation trends. Of course, some might argue that One Cour is an over generous travesty to the quality that usually emerges in the Harem genre.

Finally, as Harems go, Kono Naka is one of the most plausible I think I've ever seen.

That show seems childish/pointless to me, where this show does not. But I can't really understand why. Maybe I feel that, despite no intense characterization, these characters have more substance. Maybe I just feel these voices more? Sakurai Takahiro is a heck of high-class seiyuu for a harem lead. And Ishihara Kaori, Hidaka Rina, and even Ogura Yui all have strong flavour in their voices.

I guess this series is more focused as a typical fun loving harem anime, so it is a safer approach where fans know what to expect. KoiChoco tries to focus on politics, which could turn off and bore some viewers. Also, when it comes down to it, KoiChoco acts less like a harem and more like love triangle with intense drama in between (not necessarily between the girls). The interactions there have been more one on one, whereas in Kono Naka, the girls fight over each other for the guy.

If I had to choose, the story in KoiChoco is a lot more engaging. I come to watch Kono Naka for the guilty pleasures and hyjinks that I come to expect from this genre.

That certainly makes sense. That's how it seems on the surface even to me. But I never believed in the characters over there. I didn't feel any "there" there. I just didn't care about them. And the story didn't engage me. Maybe I have to watch more to actually get into it. Personal reactions. Certainly the quality of the voices here is better, and that affects me more than it does others, I think.

Am I the only one that thinks Shougo's an idiot for not suspecting Yuzurina?

He has that witch sempai clues to help him confirm who the imouto is.
Now that he knows the secretary is plotting against him, shouldn't his suspicions for who the real imouto is be reset?
Yuzurina's personality is different than it was shown to us in his memory, so why doesn't he question her about it? He could at least put her through some kinda verbal questionnaire test to see what she remembers from their childhood.

i think yuzu could still be the one. IF she's the illegitimate child, then she possibly has motives for why she's being evil. hated her dad for leaving her, and of course hating on shougo's mother. then she plots with that other lady, to somehow get control of the company.

then she also uses miyabi, tricks society into thinking miyabi is the illegitimate child, and forges a fake story of how she thought she was the real sister and apologizes. then after shougo is broken, and if yuzu really likes him, she'll win his broken heart.

or maybe there's two kids related to the boy.

or maybe they are all related to him.

or maybe none?

or maybe just miyabi.

i want to see who it is.

It would actually make the drama more intense if she IS the imouto and doing all this. Not like she doesn't have a legit motive, very easy to see someone who was cast aside as a unwanted mistake wanting the whole damn family to burn.

That's too bad, since I do like Rinka in her own way. My favorite is Ikusu, but she's not even listed as a candidate. That's too bad, since she is awesome in so many ways.
I hope you're wrong on who he finally chooses. I'm not convinced yet that we will get a final choice, but we'll be finding out soon enough anyway.

I really don't care for Konoe...

On the other hand, Konoe plays Shogo very, very well. Without that Imouto issue, Episode 1 may well have easily spiraled into a straightforward Konoe route.

Konoe seems like the generic main girl in every harem who is rather dull in comparison to the other girls.

And Shougo is a pretty clueless guy whose nose has been led by every girl. I can't really recall many instances where he's actually thought for himself.

There's no accounting for taste. If he picks her, that's his(err the writer's) choice, but she is last on my list, as is every female character similar to her in anime dating back 25+ years...

I hate admitting it but it really looks like Miyabi is the little sister rather than Ikusu.
I'd like to know why miss super-ninja didn't just run there and took the letter from her when she saw it .

The possibility of there being two sisters still stands though.

It's too late in the series for that to be a possibility. Not to mention that there has been no hints towards it.

There are some lingering questions in my mind after watching this episode:
  1. What is Seri's and Yuzurina's relationship? Also, are they working together or do they have their own agenda?
  2. What did Miyabi and Yuzurina talk about when they were alone? If Miyabi really did just talk about Shougo, it seems that she doesn't really have a problem with Yuzurina being the 'sister'. Surely, with the two alone in private she would've raised the question.
  3. Who was on the phone with Seri? An important character or some random henchman? It's almost definitely not Yuzurina, since she found and was talking to Miyabi and called Shougo right after.
  4. Why doesn't Mei at least tell Shougo that Yuzurina wasn't her friend from the past? All of her actions this ep points to Miyabi, but maybe Yuzurina actually was it?
  5. Why is Yuzurina in a hurry for Shougo to get with someone? It shouldn't really affect the scandal plot, and she's not specifically pushing him to one girl. (She was okay with both Konoe and Miyabi)
  6. Ikusu must have a motive for helping Shougo, or was hired by someone with the same motive. I wonder which it is and what motive?
  7. How does Rinka get away with wearing a dress like that with no one commenting on it?!

Also, Yuzurina got a bath scene. Bath scene in this anime so far = good person.
