Since I rewatched Local Hero again last night after posting, I noticed another connection between the film and this episode of Space Brothers. When Mac and Danny are eating dinner the first night in Gordon's hotel restaurant, Danny squeezes a lemon and squirts the juice into Mac's eye. Who knows if there is any real connection, but given the other little tributes to films in Space Brothers like the scenes from The Right Stuff, also released in 1983, you never know. There are not many movies other than films like Apollo 13 where Houston is a setting, so perhaps the crew for Space Brothers actually have watched Local Hero. It is a film that crops up on critics' "best" lists and is used in film study classes.

By the way, this was the last film for special effects director Wally Veevers who worked with Stanley Kubrick on Dr. Strangelove and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

OK, I'm done fanboying now.

That juice in the eye connection is a brilliant catch - I doubt it's a coinkidinky.

Recent ratings for this show have not been all that great. Though the episode two weeks ago got a 3.1, the last one scored a 2.6, and ones in August were in the twos as well. (Yes, there were the Olympics and summer vacation.) That's down a full point from the average ratings in the spring. I've begun to wonder if the audience expecting to see some space travel in this series has started to fall away.

Rumor has it that no one will be travelling into space before this show ends based on reports from manga readers. I, for one, will feel rather disappointed if that's the case. If they cannot get either of the brothers into space in forty-eight weeks, I'm not sure "Space Brothers" is an appropriate title for this show.

Are you complete sure it's gonna be 48 only? They have been moving really slow with the adaptation, the anime used only 5 volumes of the manga so far. Maybe they are going for a long-running series...?

Well we were told that the interviews in Houston were timed to coincide with Hibito's launch, and in the latest episode he mentioned that he'll be leaving for Florida in two days, so it seems like we'll be getting some space travel soon.

I'm really curious about the live action film -- I know there were shots of space travel in the trailer I saw, so how condensed did they have to make the story? I have the feeling that everything from episode two through the present was handled in a five minute montage.

Judging by the "anime viewer ratings" thread, most animes had a very poor week, so it's not just Uchuu Kyoudai.

Also, I am certain Hibito will go to space. Although, the anime / manga might end when Mutta will take off for a mission that will finally push him ahead of his little bro and this could be Mutta's first real mission. (which would mean no Mutta in space for us)

And I noticed the manga was finally being scanlated. Last I checked, only a few chapters were out, so I didn't bother but the manga caught up and even seems to be one or two chapters ahead now. Could be worth checking out.

I might check out the manga when the anime is finished.

Anyways I have not read the manga, but I could see the series ending with Mutta becoming an astronaut even if he doesn't reach space, we might have to read the manga for that. This is just a guess though since I don't know how fast things happen in the manga.

Although if the anime is at Vol 5 now, we are only halfway through which means we should get to around Vol 10 by the end of the series.

As of episode 25, there are only 7 days left until Hibito's launch. Bad weather can only delay it so long. We're definitely going to see Hibito in space very soon, no worries. It's doubtful we'll see Mutta in space before the end of the show though. He's going to have to undergo a lot of training before being ready.

Next episode is the final examination. Looks like Soichi Noguchi is back! Lol at Mutta falling off his chair in the preview. The face he makes is hilarious. I'm not worried about him in any case.

Forget about space travel, I'm more interested in finally seeing the whole cast together -- the scene with Mutta's parents meeting Serika was awesome, and throwing Hibito into the mix should add more fun. Too bad Furuya's not around to meet Rolly as that would be a recipe for hilarity.

It'd be hilarious if his chair has a loose screw, he tries to fix it and it falls apart.

"Start the ending music!"

I actually wonder if that was an adlib in the recording session and they kept it in...

The thing I love about this show is that it's not a big flashy spectacle but it's got real character and heart. Looking forward to next week already!

This episode reminded me a lot of the great Giant Killing episode that set up the big match with Osaka – and I mean that as high praise, as that was arguably the greatest stage-setting episode in sports anime. If Hunter X Hunter is a glorious example of everything a great and smart shounen can be, Uchuu Kyoudai is an advertisement for everything that seinen can be when it’s at its best.

What a great episode.

(I love the attention to detail; they even added the Government of Canada logo to the Canadarm2 in that shot of the ISS!)

Maybe i'm alone here, but i'm really glad the parents, Serika, Nitta and co. are arriving.
The reason is...i just don't find Hibito interesting, or at least not on par with the supporting cast. I think Mutta shines way more when he's in Japan, interacting with other characters.

With Hibito, there has been no comedy (the comedy in Houston is centered around the dog) or tension (since his training is going really smoothly), but it should change when we gets closer from his departure.

Let's hope so. So far I, like Goty, find Hibito rather a bland character.

"Serika-chan" must have wondered just what it was that Mutta's parents have heard about her. If I were in her shoes, I'd be a bit taken aback by that introduction. I wonder if she realized it said something about how Mutta feels toward her.

I wonder about that. She does have one thing in common with Mutta, and that is her tendency to scrutinize and attempt to regulate her own socially unusual behavior so intently that she becomes largely immune to any weirdness around her. She doesn't seem like the type that would necessarily be taken aback by their overly familiar greeting. At the very least, she sure didn't look too bothered by it.

Although, who knows, maybe she really is conscious of his eccentricities and this was just one more thing to throw on the pile.

Voting Mutta best animu/mango character in ages. Such a genuine nice guy.

PS. I'll be so sad when Kokuhaku isn't there next weeek.
