Heh, that was my first thought too.

Episode 3 started off really slow, I thought. The interactions between the perpetually aroused Kuuko and the unwilling Nyaruko just aren't funny to me. They get really repetitive, really fast. However, the episode picked up steam again in the second half, and got right back on track with awesome scene after awesome scene. The ending was golden. I knew she'd say something, but she sure pulled out all the stops.

Cuuko serves a single purpose, albeit a funny one: She is there to illuminate Nyarko's staggering lack of self-awareness, and to once and for all put to rest any lingering sympathy we might have for her unrequited crush on Mahiro. Even when Cuuko and she are word-for-word re-enacting a previous scene between herself and Mahiro (with her in Mahiro's place), she doesn't give off even the slightest spark of recognition or reflection, and when it's over, she's learned absolutely nothing from it. Nyarko is blissfully stupid, and I love her for it

Not that Cuuko isn't funny; she has some great moments. I cracked up when she acted as Shantak's birthing coach, but the best was when she said it was her safe day. Although the fact that Nyarko didn't correct her with a sharp "why would that even matter??" makes me question if Cuuko's dream of bearing Nyarko's children might actually be possible. I don't know (or care to know) the biology involved.

Either way, Nyarko is still the best reason to keep watching, in my opinion. I can see Cuuko's antics wearing thin if she's overused.

By the way, check out some of the assorted items strewn across Mahiro's floor in the last act. What are those two doing there?

Sex crazed cthulhu dieties in bodies of little lolis. One wants to gobble up the poor innocent human boy while the other wants to be knocked up by his/her arch enemy.

This show is going to be a blast to watch!

Not quite the same energy as the previous episodes, but I blame it on Cthugha being given some of the screentime. She talks really really carefully (meaning slow), which takes away some of Nyaruko's motormouth moments. Gotta love her continuing attempts at consumating with the Crawling Chaos though... The thought of two Great Old Ones getting it on can be mind-blasting.

Lol her brother was the culprit. Can't wait to see Mahiro's mom cause a ruckus.

started watching the first episode, man Nyaruko talks fast. its like I'm watching Excel Saga.

surprised to find out that the one voicing the male lead, Mashiro is Eri Kitamura, can't recongize it at all from Karen from Nisemonogatari. She seems to be everywhere this year.

That's what I'm reminded of, too. Except Nyaruko is waaaay cuter and waaaay less annoying to me (somehow). Probably because she kind of reminds me of myself if I were a lot more hyper. XD

If only Nyaro's seiyuu was Maeno Tomoaki, it would have been perfect.

Someone remind me who "nii-nii" references to?

And where's she hiding that chainsaw? Guys, reconsider if you want to venture into the pleasure realm of Walking Chaos.

Nii-Nii is a reference to Tachibana Miya from Amagami who Asumi Kana(Nyarlko's VA) does as well.

Miya, Junichi's sister from Amagami SS. She also has the "nishishishishi" laugh.

Just finished...damn, that was funny. "Nii-nii"...I guess a Higurashi shout-out is good for a show with Cthulhu Mythos deities. Shantaks like belly-rubs...who knew? (Personally, I still think he looks more like a byakhee, though...) The Kuuko-->Nyarko-->Mahiro antics are funny (heh..."safe day" Though hey, the normal Nyarlathotep has avatars of multiple genders...).

Weirdly, I have to give the writers all kinds of bonus points for actually paying attention to the source material. Shanta-kun laying eggs, for example...makes a lot of sense when you consider the "bird" imagery used to describe them (cf. Lin Carter's "The Fishers from Outside," for an example). And Nyaro's form with the single tentacle is the default form from the Call of Cthulhu game rules, yes, but it's more specifically the avatar called the "Bloody Tongue" from Masks of Nyarlathotep--meaning that the anime staff had to know that in order to color the tentacle replacing his head red (when it's not featured in any color art in the game products). Silly, yes, but given that the main reason I was drawn to the series in the first place is that I'm a Mythos nerd, well...I really appreciate that sort of thing.

Edit: Oh, "nii-nii" is a different "nii-nii"? Darn.

(Hmm...so is the King in Yellow a pretty boy or a reverse trap? Inquiring minds...actually don't want to look too closely, since SAN is going down rapidly. )

not a fan of kuuko at this point, she doesnt have that spark and also cuts nyaruko screentime...
still a fan of naruko even knowing the nyarhar-something- true form, at least her human form is not a trap.

All signs point to The Unspeakable as a very pretty boy in this one, but one can't really say when it comes to Great Old Ones...

Anyway like many people this made me break out my old Call of Cthulhu books to read. The 6th Edition rulebook alone brings back a lot of fond memories of madness...

This is probably my favorite episode so far, very similar in structure to the first one with lots of Nyaruko screentime and Mahiro being constantly and strongly teased by her. Of course, the addition of Kuuko to the mix produces some interesting results.

And talking about Kuuko, is she bi after all? That line after making the "pact" with Mahiro was very suggestive.
