It was expected that Sweeden was going to win. Congratulations for them

Pastora's performance gave me chills, her voice was really amazing. She should have been in the top 5.

Surprised that UK was one of the last places, and when my friend was watching Jedward singing she was like "Why are those weird Lannisters representing Ireland?"

My eyes. They are burning.

While someone gets me brain bleach, someone else please keep Sume-nee away from this thread. Thank you.

You can't keep Sumeragi from this thread but if the thread fill up of enough good posts before she check back, it will be lost in the mass...
Or you can post something ''better'' ( or ''worse'' depending of the point of view) to expect her to react to it insted. But it isn't a solution than you want to do.

This years eurovision lineup was particularly bad.

Also, Jedward are the shame of my country. That we chose them to represent us two years in a row, by popular vote is even more shameful...

Actually I am glad that she isn't here. Those two men dressed as medieval knights in a retro style are certainly fujoshi bait.

And with that song......seriously I see why they are the last - the style is downright disgusting.

MSNBC's Chris Hayes sparked controversy and debate on Sunday when he said that he felt "uncomfortable" calling soldiers killed in action "heroes" because the term can be used to justify potentially unjust wars. He later apologized for the statement.
Its hell having to apologize when one is right and its just the network being cowardly.

I think this quote from the HuffPo comments is worth repeating:
Quote:
I'm not uncomfortable with calling soldiers "heroes" - I'm uncomfortable with the military and politicians calling soldiers "heroes" and then treating them like dirt.

I'm uncomfortable calling anyone who died for any reason a "hero." Being a hero implies that you have done something, well, heroic--like saved the lives of a boatload of people. Why is it now that the hero label gets handed out for doing all sorts of mundane things and then getting killed. There are plenty of historical examples of people displaying heroic feats and then totally not dying afterwards.

Were soldiers ever called heroes before the 20th century propaganda machine?

Heracles is a hero. Odyseus is a hero, heck even Kira Yamato is a hero (even if he whines too much). A soldier that holds off 50 other enemy soldiers at the risk of his own life in order to protect the rest of his injured platoon, could be a hero. But your average joe soldier isn't a hero, he's just doing his job. Calling all soldiers heroes devalues both terms. It implies it's not good enough to be just "a soldier", and likewise it leaves no more terms for labelling the truly heroic.

The soviets had the right idea by making their ultimate award "Hero of the Soviet Union", even if they did subsequently devalue it by awarding it as birthday gifts.

I think this quote from the HuffPo comments is worth repeating:
I'm uncomfortable with people forced to apologize for making a nuanced, thought-provoking, system-questioning statement that in all honesty contains more patriotism than anything you'll see on Fox (not just blindly accepting unjust wars and critiquing the cynical usage of soldier deaths to advance and gain support for them would ultimately save more soldiers' lives).

Considering the Norks threaten war every time someone in S. Korea scratches their
ass, I wonder how those paranoids will react to this info.
