Didn't expect reality to be such a cliche as to reflect fiction, from Gundam no less - Federation secretly collabortes with the Neo Zeon movement so that it can justify its presence and relevance in the Earth sphere. (Gundam UC)
Karzai DOES have a history of saying kinda crazy things.

I wouldn't call 320 miles swimming distance.

Besides. It's not like you can just cram military gear and troops into any cargo ship and expect to pull off amphibious assaults with them. They tried that at Gallipoli in WW1, and it turned into a bloodbath. And this was against opponents who DIDN'T have highly compact and accurate guided long range missiles. The Falklands islands also have the benefit of being defended by 4 Euro Fighter Typhoons. Sure that's outnumbered by the Argentinian airforce, but it's a massively superior aircraft to anything the Argentinians have in their inventory. The Argentinian airforce would have to be willing to accept one hell of a bloody nose if they wanted to take those aircraft.

Remember. Even the Argentinian dictatorship only invaded the Falklands when the UK minmized their forces their, and seemed to indicate that they wouldn't fight to defend the islands Now there's a democratically elected regime in Argentinia that has to be more worried about casualties from a military adventure, the Argentinian military has weakened, and the UK presence has made the island more secure.

Nobody is making any moves.

Come to think of it, having a better soccer team than the British, they should actually bet the sovereignity of the Falklands in the next World Cup should they play together - they have a better chance of winning in that than an all-out war.

I find myself wondering why we lost 2000+ lives and spent billions of dollars in Afghanistan to keep Karzai in power. But then I've been wondering that for quite a while now. I supported the initial response to 9/11, but once the Bush Administration turned its attention to ousting Saddam and gave up on Al-Qaeda, it's been downhill ever since.

Of course, the ultimate irony is that we originally armed the same Islamist forces during the Reagan administration that later became the core of the Taliban.

It is an exercise in futility, many empires have tried to conquer it and each and every time it has been a black hole that eats lives and money and gives nothing in returnthe sane thing to do was to bomb the Taliban into oblivion but keeping Karzai in power is no different from what the soviets did and (as I have said before) it could bring the demise of the uSA just the same it did away with the USSR, all big empires fall due to the economic load caused by maintaining their military all around the world.

Unlike the Soviet Union, the USA wouldn't give money for nothing. They maintain military presence in countries which they think can provide an economic benefit to them.

The Soviet Union is all about presence. Vietnam gave USSR little in terms of economic contribution, while the latter pumped so much money and materiel into them that it was rated the most dangerous military in SEA in 1982; Malaysia and Singapore were constantly on a state of alert for a communist incursion while the Thai are exchanging lead with their trainers in the border jungle.

USA probably won't fall, but it will suffer a Great Depression that will result in the corporations gaining more power as they threaten to go overseas if the government doesn't kiss their ass.

If the US (and I can include Europe in this) goes into depression who will the corporations sell all their widgets too? The Chinese or other Asians who are paid low wages to maintain competitive prices? If the US or/and EU go into depression then the corporations will have a lot of stranded capital that cannot be used as people are either broke (US/EU) or do not have enough money's to buy the said widgets. I am at a loss to see how people cannot see this disconnect when people think BAU can somehow continue after the fall of such large import markets.

the mongols did pretty well in conquering that area. of course they did it by killing 9 out of 10 people and drove the remaining 1/10 into the caves. you can conqueror that area if you are willing be bloody about it.

That only works if your goal is conquest. The Americans have made no obvious claim to any lands they have invaded since 2001.

Not sure if the Soviets were intent on conquest of Afghanistan in 1980. I was sort of young back then.

The Mongols didn't use extermination camps, they just openly massacred people where they lived.

The American style of conquest is the creation of client states.

I'm more disturbed by PRC using flamethrower to kill flies, though that's certainly like them.

Over half of Austrians think the Nazis would be elected

Quote:
As Austria prepares to mark the anniversary of its annexation by Nazi Germany, an opinion poll has shown that more than half of the population think it highly likely that the Nazis would be elected if they were readmitted as a party.

A further 42 per cent agreed with the view that life “wasn’t all bad under the Nazis”, and 39 per cent said they thought a recurrence of anti-Semitic persecution was likely in Austria.
