Yes, it's been that stupid in some parts of the US. The "trading child porn" to each other (<21 yr olds trading pics) is my poster child example though.

It shows exactly how the word "children" is being mangled by zealots to mean 17, 18, ... even 20 year olds. The tragedy is that it undercuts actual crimes committed against prepubescents as badly as the "let's pretend drawings on paper are real people" bullshit.

Problem is, going after the real offenders takes work. Prosecutors who are lazy will go after easier fruit on the tree (like these teens, or the "all females look underage to anyone unfamiliar with Asian manga or Asian women for that matter" manga readers

No, not if they have to investigate you first.
That would be work.
However, if you present them an easy case, like say carry said hentai in your luggage, or on your laptop during a border inspection, they will not let this chance slip.

The Handley case (which isn't a great example but he really only had drawings of loli-hentai and he copped a plea to avoid going to trial and fighting it (which the rest of us wish he would have but it is easy to see his dilemma sitting in Iowa and not, say, in Los Angeles).

Agreed. There are times (such as this time) when someone is so full of himself about committing such crimes and shows no form of remorse at all, I believe the psycho has to be shot to death instead of being fed by taxpayers' money. And to add insult to injury, the bill showing how much the bullets spent on him cost would be sent to the A-hole's family.

Supreme Court upholds First Sale doctrine

In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court said "yes, you can resell what you buy from overseas markets in America and not infringe on copyright."

It's always interesting to see how the Court aligns on issues like this one. In this case, Breyer wrote the decision and Ginsberg wrote the dissent. She was joined by Scalia and Kennedy, hardly her usual allies. Kennedy is usually depicted as the "median Justice" on most traditional left-right votes. He was decisive on Citizens United and may also be the swing vote when the Defense of Marriage Act comes up later this term. Thomas is usually attached at the hip to Scalia but voted in favor of the doctrine in this case.

While a unidimensional model of political conflict explains a lot about American politics, there are some issues that do not fit that model and create unusual alignments like this one.
