Air Force testing new transparent armor (aluminum oxynitride)
It would be nice if the Air Force releases a photo of the transparent armor itself. I am somewhat curious..

It can be yours for between $10-$20 per square inch.... in quantity

I doubt they would. Supposably it may be due to being transparent.

If that ALON material could live up to the hype and field tests, super-thick, heavy sandwiched laminated glass may soon be dropped out of favor.

Follow that PDF link.... you can see quite pretty pictures of it...

@soulassassin547: Right now, the thick laminated glass you speak of is about $4/sq" according to the article.... but even at $10/sq" the ALON may be worth it if the weight savings is sufficiently important and they're hoping to lower the cost by mass production and civilian applications.

Just to give people a rough clue... a typical home window might be 36"x48" --> ~$17000 USD. Pricey... but not completely mind-numbing this early in development.

Just listened to the tape FAA released on flight 1549's plight to the Hudson that recounts the event as it happened from the moment the flight took off and crash landed on Hudson. "Terrifying" would be the wrong choice of word here considering how the end result turned out to be, so I would say exhilarating instead...

Nytimes article.

There is also a transcript of the account posted in the article considering it can be difficult to understand the radio transmission at times. Captain Sullenberger is one cool dude.

Interesting.. To make an armor out of that sounds rather.. Not sure how to put it, but if you wear the transparent armor and go into a war, wouldn't the transparency give away your strengths and weaknesses to the enemies. There aren't many types of transparent armor material to begin with and whatever you wear under it would also be revealed as well, whether it be a secret weapon or a bulletproof vest.

Um, yeah, it'd replace any glass fixtures (periscopes, viewports, etc) and possibly add capability to see in directions not previously possible (full field of view).
Armored vehicles have pretty restricted visual fields (even with televiewing doodads).

Other applications would be in aerospace arenas or any sector where high velocity projectiles might be an issue. I could even see these on construction vehicles, vegetation clearing tools, etc if the price drops.

Yandere: the only type of anime girl you're likely to meet in real life.

That guy must have had a lot to drink to not feel that though. In a way he's lucky too. If she was drunk at the time as well, it's amazing she didn't accidentily cut him too deep and sever an artery.

Maybe Wonder Woman would buy enough to build her Invisible Plane.

i wonder if anyone would actually be willing to fly on a plane that you can see through? If this stuff is as strong as advertist you can built a plane where if you look down you will see a lot of empty air.
