Here it was just used to show that Haru cared for Yuki while he was sick, and Yuki didn't particularly mind.

You catch a cold from a virus not from being wet, cold or both. That's just an Old wives' tale.

Heh, I did not know that. You would think that after seeing so much anime at least one series covers this subject.

I'm going to need more direct scientific experimentation before I totally believe that, myself.

A brief Google search turned up this page from Cardiff University, which says that they did an experiment in which they chilled one group's feet in cold water, and that group got more colds over the next five days.

There is also this abstract of a review paper that says: "Although not all studies agree, most of the available evidence from laboratory and clinical studies suggests that inhaled cold air, cooling of the body surface and cold stress induced by lowering the core body temperature cause pathophysiological responses such as vasoconstriction in the respiratory tract mucosa and suppression of immune responses, which are responsible for increased susceptibility to infections."

It is certainly true that a virus is the operative factor in getting a cold. You can get as cold as you like and if there are no or few viruses in your system, you won't get sick. But if there are viruses, you may be more vulnerable when you are cold. The jury is at least still out on this, I believe.

In any case, I have to say that old wives often know what's going on. And not that I'm trying to be a PC cop -- I don't actually care -- but it is true that the phrase "old wives' tale" is both sexist and ageist, implying that older women are silly creatures.

But it's exactly thinking like that is the defining point of a fujoshi. Taking that away from them means taking away what separates them from the rest of the otaku.

Obviously there is no yaoi on the show (its a story about friendship ) but I notice there are barely ever any anti-Yuri comments on these boards. But give just a hint of a close male bonding and you get the anti-yaoi comments coming out.

Let me just float two possible reasons for this:
  1. there are more series that lend themselves to 'non-existant' yaoi couples-shipping than their yuri counterparts, and
  2. the most ardent shippers of both types of pairings are...female.

(p.s. these are just observations from a conversation with a friend on this board. Though I have an aversion to excessive shipping of any sort - het pairings included - I don't think it's gone too far in this thread yet...and I kinda hope it stays that way... )

I don't know I think there are a lot of series where you can put the Yuri goggles on just as much as Yaoi goggles and I see a lot of members on here who are specifically fans of it (and of course I think there is nothing wrong with that) but I've definitely been noticing a double standard.

I am not much of a shipper either or I should say I am not a non-canon shipper. If it's not in the actual story I tend to not care about it but it does annoy me that other people seem to care what other fans like. If fans want to ship Natsuki/Yuki so be it. It's not going to ruin the actual narrative or wonderful friendship they are building in the series.

I mean I do understand it gets annoying when fans claim something that is obviously fanon is canon but if they just enjoy it outside of canon then what is the big deal?

The tendency for more yuri shipping is, I think, largely because men outnumber women here, and heterosexual men find lesbianism erotic. (Homosexual men might, too, but I can't speak to their tastes.) Porn films often include a lesbian scene despite having a male target audience. The ones I've seen (not many but enough) usually have heterosexual scenes and a lesbian scene but never portray male homosexuals.

Spoiler for frankness:

Frankly, I think this is ridiculous. (Also, whoever made that image must be very new to the internet. Tiger and Bunny had "gay porn" after the very first episode, how about that. Then again, other shows have hot girl-on-girl action fanart or just plain straight porn after the very first episode but curiously no-one ever seems to complain about that.)

I'm no fan of "shipping discussions" because they always end up spiraling into ship wars (covert or overt), but aside of that, what does anyone care if other people ship or not ship? Seriously, does it actually hurt anyone?

And what does it have to do with this thread? I mean--

...did I miss anything? Has anyone even talked about shipping in this thread? o_O Before that image was posted we were talking about catching a cold. o_O

Pretty much. Bottom line is, people tend to watch/fantasize about what they like. If someone thinks girl-on-girl action is hot they'll fantasize about that. If someone thinks guy-on-guy action is hot they'll fantasize about that. It would be no big deal, except some people just can't deal with the fact that their tastes are not universal and that they sometimes come across stuff they (OMG!!) not like.

And yeah, seconding what Kirarakim said. Just once I'd like to see someone complain about all the yuri shipping and the "lesbo porn" fanart and all those porn doujins in say, the Madoka Magica thread.

This show seems to start the weirdest discussions.. First ways of catching a cold and now shipping and sexuality... What about ...fishing?

Personally I'm curious to know how the main characters will save the world. They mentioned that they would end up saving the world (unless I was very tired when I watched it and I dreamt it.) So again.. fishing??? How?

Well the 2010 live action Girl Who Leapt Through Time movie does show some Japanese hippies, though sadly no riots.

Thing is, while we're seeing plenty of character development, there isn't much in the way to discuss on the plot development. Story is progressing at a snail's pace. Heck, I don't even know where to start. Doubtless that discussions would tend to go off-tangent.

Very nice post - I don't necessarily agree with everything it says (Natsuki, for example, seems to be pretty OK with Haru, he's much more friendly and less grouchy with him as I would've expected), but overall I think the relationships are developing mostly along these lines.

Buuut... "stifling relationships"? I don't think I agree with this translation. (At first I didn't even knew which scene it was in, but Akira didn't have too many scenes so far...) Akira didn't say anything about relationships, he just said he hated people being "atsukurushii"* referring to Yuki (and then Haru) being all and fired-up and shouting ENO-SHIMA-DON. By the way, on the association game page on the official site, when Kate asks them what "youth" makes them think of, Akira says "atsukurushii".

*I can't think of a good English term for this in this context, but basically it conveys a sense of being overly passionate and zealous and hot-blooded and so on. Sorta.

This. I am a shipper and I do like non-canon ships. Why shouldn't I? It makes my viewing experience more enjoyable for me and if you don't ship or you don't like yaoi, it really has nothing to do with you. Fans can like what they like, why should they stop? Just because you (general you, no one in specific) don't like shipping doesn't make you a better fan or somehow superior. If you don't like it, just ignore it.

If you like this sort of thing and you've watched Noein, I recommend the tour of Hakodate with director Akane Kazuki and Haruka's seiyuu Kudou Haruka that appears on the DVDs (including the R1 release from Media Blasters). First, Akane has a major crush on Kudou that becomes apparent during the interview segments. You also get to see many scenes that are portrayed in the anime like those from the observation area at the top of the mountain and the docks. However my favorite single scene is the one where Kudou sits at a school desk just like her anime counterpart. Anime Haruka's hair style and character model are obviously drawn to look like the real-life Haruka as a twelve-year-old girl.

BTW, I found the cardboard stand-up cutouts in those scenes from Enoshima quite cute.
