Baby Steps Manga Discussion

Manga title: ベイビーステップ (Baby Steps)
Author: Hikaru Katsuki
Serialization: Weekly Shōnen Magazine (October 2007 – present)
Official website: http://kc.kodansha.co.jp/content/top.php/1000003295

Description from Baka-Updates:

Quote:
Maruo Eiichirou (Ei-Chan), a first year honor student, one day decides he's unhappy with the way things are and lacks exercise. He finds a flyer for the Tennis Club and decides to check it out. He's instantly captivated by it. With no prior experience and poor physical conditioning, join Ei-Chan as he embarks on a tennis journey using his smarts, dedication and work ethic.
Currently on chapter 122 of this, and I have to say, it's been an interesting and inspirational journey so far. The art is pleasant, the characters are lovable, and the tennis is interesting (and realistic, unlike another certain popular tennis series....).

What? You don't think a series where the protagonist is playing tennis with two half tennis ball in the court won't be popular?

Anyway, I love this series. E-chan's a good protagonist, and Na-chan is so hnnggh inducing . I pity Aki-chan a little bit though(Na-chan's rival).

Lol, which reminds me that the other series also have someone who mastered Kage Bunshin no Jutsu; I guess that makes it popular with Naruto fans

Na-chan is a true sports manga heroine. I mean, when do we see real love interests in sports manga? There probably are others, but not more than a dozen, I bet. Shounen sports series is almost always Fujoshi bait

Great manga! Love the competitiveness of E-chan and there's really no douchebag characters, briefly at times but still not any that would detract from the enjoyment of the series...

Also like Natsu's bubbly character and that she's actually proactive in a certain part of the story...

Speaking of which the romance is what I consider perfect for a sports oriented manga. It's not overwhelming and doesn't really get in the way of the tennis plot. Just enough to add a little spice and something extra to the plot...

The latest raw chapters are going to be nail biters to see what happens with E-chan after his latest match...

Seitsuki, I won't classify RouKyuuBu as a sports series.

Which reminds me, this is actually one of the manga which I'm buying the tanks, though I started at 18, and the last one I bought was 23 (I think). But I haven't been catching up lately (though I believe I'm still ahead of the scantalations) .

I'm not usually the kind who follows sports manga, mostly going for reading completed ones (which are rare). Baby Steps though is the one sports manga I've been following for a while now, and it's quite good. No secret move H4XX or sudden power ups or exaggerated moves, just tennis, and yet they somehow make it still awesome.

Spoiler for Chapter 191:

Anime made me want to read the source, so marathoned the manga. One extremely noticeable thing is that there are many players that are at least as good as a low ranked pros but are still reluctant to go that way, with Ei-chan being a prime example - there's only one All-Japan Junior winner in the whole country each year, but even Nabuo that has a couple of those titles already is still hesitating to become a pro.

With active tennis life of a player being ~20 years tops, surely there must be more than 20 pro players in Japan?

This made me look up - just how many Pros are there in Tennis? Turns out only about 200 men and 150 women in the whole world make enough in prize money ($100k+, since they have to spend extremely much on flights) to make a living through playing tennis as pros. That's less than one pair of players per Country(!!!)
No wonder they are so afraid of stepping on this path...

Whoa. So latest raws.

Spoiler for chaper 290~ range:

... So, I was expecting or something something like that to happen, and it's finally here. The series could perfectly end after the next tournament or keep on with developing the character's futures, this has been a really good read so far and any possible future path looks interesting.
