I'm sorry to have to ask another question, but I'm not getting automatically subscribed to the threads I post in, which at first was making me think I wasn't receiving responses when I was, and even now that I realize what it's doing I can't remember what I've posted. Is there a way to get it to automatically subscribe me when I post in a thread?

That's great, but for the sake of anyone else viewing this, here is the answer:

Navigate to your User Control Panel's Edit Option section: User CP > Edit Options
Scroll down to "Messaging & Notification", where you will find the "Default Thread Subscription Mode" setting.
