Challenge:Trying to get my friend into anime :S
Now this is a challenge!
When I rant about how "he fell in love with her who is in love with some other guy who is in love with her sister" (I made that up), I don't think she fully understands how I feel!! Neither of us are Asian or anything, so she doesn't have that knowledge of anime or manga.. I want her to understand why I love it so much!!! The only thing is.. She is sooo picky!! It's unbelievable how picky she can be!! I've asked her what genre she's into and here's what I figured.. LOTS of action, comedy, something to do with cars, a bit of adult humor, not any ecchi, not MUCH gore and preferably set in modern times (today) This may not seem like much picky-ness but trust, I will have to inspect it before I let her watch it :S thanks for reading through all this and thanks for the suggestions

How about School Rumble? It has both dubs and subs if your friend would prefer not to read subtitles.
There are shows about cars and racing like Redline and Initial D, but I can't speak to them. Benika drives a pretty cool car in Kurenai, and the show itself is complex and interesting, but it has a theme about Spoiler:
There's not much action in Welcome to the NHK!, and it does touch on ecchi themes, but there are no actual ecchi scenes. Again it has subs and dubs.

As odd as this suggestion may sound to some, I do think that Gintama fits in nicely with your description.
Action=Checked Comedy=Unbelievable amount of it A bit of adult humour=Checked Not much gore=Checked (they do fight, and it can get messy but that often happens only during "serious arcs", which doesn't happen frequently) Modern times=It's ancient Edo that has been modernized. Heck, the Shisengumi has even deserted horses in favour of cars! Something to do with cars.....this is tricky. I guess if she wants to look at how cars are driven by maniacs, she can watch it in Gintama. Gintama is your all-in-one anime.

Can I Be Your Wai-Wafu?

Here's what I have. I don't know if it'll fully fit with your friends expectations but I'll do what I can.
Let's see: Durarara!! - It involves gangs, otakus, urban legends, and a headless biker. Ben-To - Lots of action, comedy, a character drives a car or a motorcycle (I forget which one), and makes me hungry watching each episode.

Seconding Durarara!!: settled in modern times, loads of action, a very interesting headless biker, an inhuman dude throwing snack machines around and even some little romance undergoing.
Baccano would be a version of Durarara settled in the 900's. Actually, it's more like Durarara is a version of Baccano settled in the 21th century. If it still is a must for it being settled in "modern" times, than you can't go wrong with Durarara. Btw, iirc Ben-To has some ecchi, but i'd second that aswell, since the action is very well played and the title is very enjoyable, despite the exageration. |

Hmmm..that's a bit difficult.
Lets see... Ah My Goddess has cars, modern times, comedy, but not a lot of action. Full Metal Panic has lots of action, comedy, set in modern times, and has a lot of American action movie references. Not a lot in the way of cars though. Has a good dub, which is often important to new anime viewers. Personally I think that maybe you shouldn't try to match her request as much as just pick a very good solid anime to show her. Fullmetal Alchemist is a good choice for action. Madoka Magica might be good if she has a secret thing for magical girls (I've noticed that a lot of girls do even when they don't want to admit it).

Redline (it's a Japanese movie BTW) really fits for what her friend is looking for (even though it has more american feel than japanese) : lot of action, comedy, abnormal amounts of car (this is the movie's main nature) and no ecchi or gore. A perfect fit for Ellie's friend !

Full Metal Panic!, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist are shows that seem to appeal to new anime watchers pretty often.
To stick more closely to the categories, You're Under Arrest 4-episode OVA. Categories: action, comedy, and driving. There is some nice car animation. No ecchi, no gore. Last edited by Ermes Marana; 2012-05-01 at 12:08. |
